A Restaurant in our Area. . .

. . . is closing its doors for now completely - no takeout. They are also giving their employees paid time off and they are fixing the leftover food for their employees to take home to their families.

Another one is cooking food and fixing lunches so local school families who depended on breakfast and lunch at school can have healthy meals.

Another chain is paying their employees while they are off work

You can bet when we get the "all clear" to go out and eat again we will be supporting these restaurants!

What a terrible thing to say . What do you think these restaurants are suppossed to do ?

I belive that they are doing the right thing .

i think these are wonderful things to do to help out the community. however, not ALL restaurants and small businesses can afford to do these types of things. it is worrisome that if this health crisis and executive order in our state lasts a long time, some of these places could be permanently out of business.

we are lucky........Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Karen Salmon has applied for a Federal waiver to provide three meals a day plus a snack to those who need it. Statewide, 138 centers already up and operating. Visit MDSummerMeals.org to find all participating locations.

@shelbyshelbyshelby- I think you need to reread the OP's post. She's complimenting these restaurants and saying she'll support them, when they reopen.

@sunshine45 - I certainly didn't mean to demean any other restaurants who can't afford to do this. We have a close friend who owns a small pizza place. He is offering takeout. I just think if these places CAN afford to do this, it's nice that they did. I think it's probably unusual for a chain restaurant to do this. I got an e-mail from the CEO earlier tonight saying that. We do already go to the last two. We haven't been to the first one, but we will go when we can.

You're lucky to have a Superintendent who is doing what she can. . I know people are helping in many ways around here. That's all any of us can do.

Here in the SF bay area, we're shelter in place for the next 3 weeks. DH is working from home and the kids are home from college. I'm happy to report that some of our favorite restaurants are offering takeout/delivery. Our small businesses will really suffer during this time and we need to support them!

I'm seeing a lot of good coming out of this already.

I think people need to step back and quit assuming that everything they see happening is for the bad. Everyone wheeling full carts out of stores isn't hoarding.

Today, I went to an Aldi's in a town we usually don't shop in. They were pretty well stocked. I went in just for dairy and fresh produce. I was buying for three households. My mom is elderly and I don't want her out. My son hit stores this weekend in our usual town, as his cupboards are bare from just moving, and couldn't find any dairy, bread and produce type things. So I was buying milk and other diary, eggs, and other produce for three households. I kept to the limits set by the store, but had a full cart. I'm sure people thought I was hoarding.

I saw on the news tonight, a number of people who went out and bought cases of things, then went back into their neighborhoods and were taking it to various households where people couldn't get out and needed things.

There is a lot of things people are seeing and making judgements on, and they really don't know what is actually going on.

Yes this all is sad, but I do think we are doing a good job containing this virus with our eveyday times. Stay home, relax so sad for the ones that rely on tips but stay safe. We have to understand .

We're all painfully reactive in these times. Some of us feel victimized, some unprepared, some of us feel helpless and frightened.

I'm in the vulnerable "old" group, and so is my husband. We have responsibility for a 92 year old LO who is presently sheltering in place in a local AL, and no one is allowed to visit her. I'm terrified that she can't see us, and in the confusion of dementia, can't understand why we're not there.

We have a beautiful brand new grandchild and another grandchild with a physical challenge. All of my children are teachers, and schools have closed, possibly indefinitely.

Our local grocery stores have been hit very hard, Churches have been closed, schools are closed with no idea of when they'll open again.

Let's try to give each other a pass when we hear something that rubs us the wrong way, and assume that in this crisis everyone is doing the best that he or she can.

As has already been pointed out, we have NO IDEA of what's happening in someone else's life.

Here in NJ they can do take out orders but dining rooms are closed.

It's just my opinion but I think they should all close completely. How much is it going to cost to bring in a cook or two, turn all the lights on, turn all the stoves on, etc.

I've mentioned it many times, my daughter is a Darden restaurant manager. They will be open for take out orders but she doesn't see that happening, she thinks her shift today will be cleaning and trying to find someplace that they can donate the food to or give it to the staff rather than have to throw it all away. Corporate doesn't allow them to freeze the protein for later use and she doesn't want to see it end in the trash.

A downtown fixture diner will have free carry-out for kids home from school. Parents call ahead and show up with kids and they'll receive breakfast or lunch sack. Not only does this cafe always give a free cinnamon roll with any meal, but they're doing something very good for their 'neighborhood.' I understand they're also taking good care of their employees during this difficult time. Kudos to our fave cafe. We will absolutely do carry outs, and tip well, here during our isolation time.

So far, only one restaurant by me has decided to close the dining in portion and are now offering curbside takeout.

Others are offering free lunches to students that are home from school.

However, spring breakers are here along with many tourists and they even had a St. Patrick's event going on. So, basically not much has changed where I am.

the first thing i stated was that it was a wonderful thing.

was i being negative in the rest of the statement i made or just being a realist?

its the truth......not all restaurants can afford to do this sort of thing, even if they wanted to. whether they are doing it or not, i will be supporting my favorite restaurants/bars when they are back up and running. unfortunately, not every restaurant in my area is even doing carry out or delivery service......they are totally shutting down and we have no idea for how long.

Beginning tonight, another downtown restaurant will open at 5pm - 7:30pm only each evening and will serve take out - 1 meal option. Menu will change each day. They ask patrons "take what they need and pay what they can. Tip generously." They put on Facebook @ 6:20pm that they had to close early as they ran out of food. They thanked patrons for paying generously and big tips. I understand there was some paying forward going on for the next person in line. They asked that there be social distancing for those waiting to be served and if someone can afford it, pick up dinner for people who cannot afford it or shouldn't get out. YOU BET WE'LL FREQUENT THIS RESTAURANT ONCE WE GET AN 'ALL CLEAR.'
