Covid-19 In my county now

So, I knew it was only a matter of time, but we just got our first confirmed case of Covid-19 this afternoon. The person had been overseas. :-( :-( WHY, WHY wasn't travel restricted WEEKS ago?

I just don't understand this. IF they really wanted to get a hold on this, why didn't they take out ALL the stops necessary? Just things I think about, while I try to remain positive about this subject, but now that it's actually in my county I just don't know anymore. Sorry, not trying to be a downer at all. Just being realistic.

They closed my daughters school tomorrow. Next week was spring break anyways, so I guess we will see if it will be closed beyond that later on. I am really trying to remain positive/upbeat for my daughters (she is 17) sake, but also I've explained to her that there is a big chance she might be confined to the house for a while, b/c I don't want her going places that she doesn't HAVE to go. She understands.

Please everyone stay safe. Btw I am in Knoxville TN, Knox county to be exact.

Schools still open here in PA. I have teens as well.

I understand how you feel .... I am in NY & am extremely worried .... up until yesterday I hadn’t gone out for 2 weeks ... I figured I was safer in the house.... now they are saying that it’s going to get worse before it gets better!!!!! .....the world has turned into a horrible place & we are all being punished .... I pray that God watches over the good people ..... take care of yourself & your daughter 🙏🙏

@BrandiDavis Try not to worry too much. It is serious and we should all take common sense precautions, but most people who contract the virus will recover. Many will not even require medical attention. Hopefully, testing will be more widely available soon and we'll have a better idea of the number of people who are infected.

In my California county, there have been 20 diagnosed cases and 66 in our neighboring county. Most schools have gone online or are closed for at least the next couple of weeks. Restaurants are hurting right now. Costco is more crowded than usual, but still has TP and other essential items. DH and many others have been directed to work from home. I trust my local and state government officials to do what's best for our state.

We'll be okay @BrandiDavis. Distract yourself most of the time. You don't have to keep minute by minute tabs on this. Just dip into the info at scheduled times. I'm in TN too. We will be okay.

I lived in Knoxville for many years; UTK alumnus- go Vols! You are smart to prepare your daughter for possible closures and staying home. She sounds like she will be just fine.

Because weeks ago people would have screamed bloody murder if they had tried to restrict travel.

Just look at the responses from last week about the panic and the snide remarks about people over reacting. Do you really think the mood then was where you could restrict travel? I hardly think so.

The problem here is that it is a largely unknown and fluid situation--hard to deal with anything like so everything that is being done is under the "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation.

I understand, this is scary. But I have to say it is nice to come here and see some people taking this serious. My facebook feed is full of people still joking and laughing about this even after all that has been cancelled since yesterday. I really thought that would change. This is a battle that is going to take each of us taking precautions to help slow the spread. With so many people not on board and not caring, I am afraid it will take military with guns to get people to stop spreading this. At least you are aware and doing what you can, that is all each of us can do, I agree with the other comment, if it gets to be too much, take some time away from it , the information, I mean, and then come back later. I'm in PA and 2 schools in our county are closing at least till the end of the month (kids will do their studies onli]ne being the kids all have net books).. One school closing is my youngest granddaughters school district, and my daughter works there too. Also all colleges in our county are teaching online classes only now. I might add where my son in law works they travel at times and they have banned all traveling with the company for now.

Hang in there @BrandiDavis! I don't know how old your daughter is, but maybe think about doing some talking at home about germs and how we can't see them, how we try to keep from getting them, etc. Nothing scary.

And then set back and pat yourselves on the back about what you are doing to help in the overall situation. And you will never know, you may be the break in a certain chain of transmission that doesn't happen. So ultimately, you are working to help the whole of the community. That would be a great discussion with your daughter as well.

Add to that @Sooner Hindsight is 20/20. Some people even refused to self quarantine, go on petri dish ships etc etc etc. We need to be causious and don't put ourselves and others at risk. We need to come together to fight this.

@blackhole99 Yes, it is China that is to blame. i saw today that they are saying that the USA planted this virus there as a weapon against them.

How crazy! I don't think blaming the USA is going to let them get off of the hook for trying to hide this disease from their people and the world.

They should have taken this seriously and asked for help. Maybe it could have been contained.

Right now non Americans are not allowed to fly to the US from most of Europe and European countries are angry. This is very difficult to believe.

What a crazy attitude that is being put out there. We all need to work together for the sake of everyone everywhere.

@BrandiDavis I'm so sorry that you are feeling anxiety over this. Know you have a nation of people on edge with you, not in full panic but edgy, worrying like normal people do.

I hope you can manage to keep a healthy distance for yourself and your family from others as you do what must be done to get through your days.

When this virus dies away, the landscape will be quite something in retrospect.

@mspatmac I agree. It is almost impossible to legislate things like this. It simply isn't enforceable. You will always have rogues, naysayers, and jerks who don't care about the well being and safety of others.

My state is closing all schools starting Monday. And I see we have our first case identified in our county too (someone who had travelled internationally).

@Carmie Yes, and we offered China help which they refused....twice. Even though this is the case, right now we need to focus on getting healthy not blame. Amazing that China would offer such an absurd statement, especially at a time when all nations should be focusing on resources to recover. Our country is stepping up to the plate and addressing the critical issues at hand....we will make it through this.

It's a bit rough when it’s hitting closer to home. We have a patient in a nearby hospital.

Lets continue social distancing best we can and hope that the measures put in place now save lives. I’m optimistic we will be slowing the spread. That said, I’m supportive of stricter travel bans than what we currently have.

My county has closed a few schools but not my local school district. The county next to mine has closed all schools for two weeks starting today.
