Common sense so rare anymore?

I saw a mother and daughter interviewed on inside edition yesterday or some such show and they have ridden a train to come to New York to see 4 Broadway shows and on the train they heard they were cancelled due to virus. Why would anyone leave home to get on a train and go to New York to see anything now.....my mind is blown....

I agree with you, @chiclet. I wouldn't want to be on a plane, train or any other type of mass transit at this point. There is too little known about this virus, how long it lives on surfaces, the fact that people can test positive and feel fine- just so many different things.

Add to that the sheer panic some folks have, I just want to stay out of any crowded areas, at this point.

Not using common sense. There is no need for fear/hysteria...there is need for rational science based suggested precautions. This virus requires that all of us are taking the steps necessary to stay healthy for ourselves and one another.

Yeah, for sure. Common sense is a big issue. A lot of people seem to have -- hmmm --- is it tunnel vision, or what? They just see what it is they want and don't seem to take in or see or hear anything going on around them. I mean, of course, we all have things we want to do, but there are outside factors that we don't have any control over. All these restrictions right now are for the good and safety of EVERYONE. I just think, be safe, use your head and be aware.

Playing devils advocate here, why would they stay home if the show was going on, tickets are bought months in advance and they cost a fortune for a Broadway show the cheapest ticket is $125 dollars

One of my nieces got the e-mail that school will be closed for her 3 kids until April 1.

Her next FB post was about all the e-mails from the indoor playgrounds giving discounted daytime pricing while the schools are closed.

Not even on a good day did I want my daughter in one those gross and germy indoor ball pits.

I fully expect to see a post that the kids had a blast at - fill in the blank.

Maybe they wanted to get out of house and do something.

Maybe they want to keep their lives as normal as possible.

Maybe they don't want to buy in to the fear and hysteria that the sky is falling.

Perhaps because they should care about the safety of others, many people are asymtomatic. This is to be taken seriously, of course we shouldn't panic but let's use common sense. The cost of the ticket should not be a priority in times like this.

One can go out and about, live their lives, and still take precautions.

One doesn't need to cower under the covers quaking in abject terror because of the virus.

@Imaoldhippie My brother who is a physician; his sister-in-law who is an infectious disease specialist, and all his infectious disease specialist colleagues (who by the way are the experts in these matters) are saying that we should worry more about getting the flu. They are also saying wearing masks is totally useless in the prevention of getting sick. Just take some precautions and remain calm. The media, IMHO, is responsible for creating this panic.

I think the common sense thing to do if you are determined to see the shows, is check and see if the theater is closed . They must have known it was a possibility.

I've heard that a lot of companys are giving refunds for shows/events/concerts that were canceled OR they are just re-scheduling it to a different date/time.

I cannot believe they didn't at least call and make sure it was going to be open BEFORE going?? With all that is going on right now, you'd think that would be common sense, but sadly there are MANY that lack it. Now, that is scary, especially during times like these :-(

One of the reasons I divorced my husband was because after 12 years of dealing with him I was over it, but that man had NO common sense. We used to argue all the time b/c he did some of the stupidest things. Drove me crazy! Luckily I don't have to worry about that anymore :-) lol

Speaking about society as a whole right now during this "pandemic", people really need to stop panicking and start using common sense when it comes to things. If they don't, this is only going to get much much worse I'm afraid.

I think most people are waiting on the gov/CDC to guide them in the right direction and assure them they are doing all they can do. It's the fear of the unknown that is so scary and another thing that is not comforting is that the experts really don't have answers either. So, we all just have to come together and help one another thru this. We WILL prevail. I know it. Much love to everyone & their loved ones on here and I hope you ALL stay safe!!

My thought is....there are people who HAVE to be out...shopping, jobs they can't afford to take time from, needed doctor appointments ....a host of reasons.

Then there are a lot of people who do NOT have to be out.,,,for movies, games, concerts, libraries, shopping other than for necessities.

If those who don't have to be out stay home....less exposure, less chances of spreading, better chances of quicker containment.

The best thing I can do for my family and my community is to stay healthy. So I plan to only go out for groceries at slow times. Other than that, I will stay home.

Why indeed would anyone stay home? Because we are entitled, Americans, we are eligible to do anything we want, take risks, never be denied anything we want, and will suffer no consequences because, well, we are us and that's what we WANT to do! So we'll do it!

Agreed. The numbers we're getting, combined with what they're saying about the ease of transmission just don't add up. If each infected person infected just one other person each day, by day 35 more than eight billion people would have been infected. The World Health Organization says that fewer than 150,000 have been infected. There's kind of a big divide between fewer than 150,000 people being infected in 120 days and over eight billion people being infected in 35 days. It looks like the ease of transmission is being vastly overstated by the authorities.

Look at a city like Mumbai, India with a population of over eighteen million people living in just 232 square miles. That's a population density of more than 77,000 people per square mile. If the coronavirus was as easily transmitted as many people think, there would be tens of thousands of new infections there each day. Maybe they're just not being reported, but the WHO is generally pretty good at reporting real-world numbers.

Something about all of this is wrong. Either the virus is not as easily transmitted as many assume, or we're being fed vastly wrong numbers about its spread, but the numbers don't make sense. Every event and gathering in the world is being canceled for a virus that may not be nearly as easily transmitted as we're being led to believe. It's good to be safe, but I'm not so sure people aren't vastly over-reacting to what's really going on.
