NY update on restrictions

Looks like NY is banning gatherings of over 500 people in the state. Check before you go, some places are temporarily closed; MMA, Carnegie Hall, Met Opera.

Broadway Shuts Down: Performances Canceled Through April 12 Due to COVID-19 Pandemic

As a precaution due to COVID-19, all Broadway performances have been canceled until April 12, Governor Andrew Cuomo and Charlotte St. Martin, President of the Broadway League, announced today.

In addition, the 2:00PM matinee performance of Moulin Rouge: The Musical was canceled today.

I just watched last night's episode of The Daily Show and the Mayor of NYC was on. It sounds like they are doing a lot in terms of intelligent reactions and factual information. Too bad we're getting the exact opposite on the, uh, not local level.

I'm not in NY but still concerned, as people should be, especially being one who is older, asthmatic, and autoimmune challenged. It's kind of scary when you realize that you can have no idea who could be carrying it when you're out in public.

I think that cancelling large gatherings is the wise, sound thing to do. Why wouldn't it be?

They are not going to get what, they are limiting the spread by cancelling the events where large groups gather

CDC says stay at least 6 ft away from each other. You cannot do that even if you have 100 people there? It will only take 1 sick person there to spread it.

@SeaMaiden They, along with the subway are being kept as clean as possible. People seem to be using different modes of transportation if possible.

I am in NY...and lets just say I am not a fan of the Governor but I have to give him credit. He is doing a good job with his response to Covid-19 so far. I support the ban on large gatherings and the restrictions in place so far. My county so far has no confirmed cases yet.

it is a good idea

but just picking 200 or 500 doesn't make sense

it's just one vector that is the problem

they can be in a group of 10

We just had our first confirmed cases around me in NY. The grocery stores were mobbed this afternoon and we are now on the toilet paper wipeout list. The panic that people are showing doesn't make me feel any better. Now a small few have a ton of supplies with no likely chance of being quarantined.

WOW!!! Thank you for that info! I had tickets to see Moulin Rouge today with a group from my local JCC. I decided not to go and asked them to try and sell my ticket. Now I won't be out the money if they reschedule or give a refund. Whew!!!!

I really, really wish posters would try to refrain themselves from using phrases like "virus death trap." As has been noted here repeatedly, testing positive for Covid-19 is not a death sentence, but some here are insistent on instilling maximum fear, anxieties and panic. For their personal amusement, I still contend.

@pigletsmom Hugs to you! I'm sorry that your area is also experiencing this level of panic/hoarding. I think that so many are just fearing all the "unknowns" with this virus, myself included. I am however not hoarding or panicking, bc that isn't going to do anyone any good. I am scared, but still being logical about all of this, as I think we all should be.

Please just keep taking all the necessary precautions that you can to keep you and your family safe. Remember you are not alone in this. At first when all of this was coming out in the news and here on these forums I started to let my anxiety win and it was upsetting me to visit here and see all the threads. Ironically enough, those very threads have actually allowed me to have some peace/hope within and for that I'm grateful. It helps to see how others are coping with this and it gives me some inspiration as well.

It also helps to know that there are others out there that DO actually care

@Johnnyeager ITA -- There are a couple of posters on here who I feel like it is their mission to try and scare the beejeezus out of people, myself included. Any time someone posts even the slightest bit of positive news, there they are to knock it down. Honestly, in this situation that doesn't do any good. We NEED people to be optimistic, but also careful right now and to learn the FACTS associated with this virus. There is so much false information circulating out there, it's no wonder some think the sky is falling. Panicking isn't going to help anyone and the media really needs to stop with the "what if's" and report facts only.

ETA: Not sure what happened to the rest of my post, lol, it disappeared though.

@Johnnyeager Perfectly said! Just because someone has tested positive doesnt mean you are going to die. People who have had it and recovered are starting to post their experience.

And if one dares step outside of the panic zone, one is labeled uninformed and uncaring.

You cannot even be concerned about low-income residents and seniors on fixed incomes needing food without some attack because one is not all in a tizz over a canceled sports game.

Seriously, folks. Have some priorities.
