The governor of Ohio just announced ALL Ohio schools will be closed for the next 3 weeks to try to contain the spread of the virus.

Interesting.....I assume the schools will be sanitized. I hope all the events/schools that are canelling will do the trick and get the virus under control. I am praying for an early summer, dry and hot.

My Granddaughters School here in Ohio made all the kids take home all their books today before it was announced.....

All extra-curricular activities were cancelled an hour before....

Will the 3 weeks have to be made up, cutting into the summer vacation ( it would be two weeks as there is an Easter/Passover break coming up)?

Maybe not the whole 3 weeks since we had such a mild winter (here in NE Ohio), most schools still have a bunch of snow days coming. I'd bet they might have to extend a little into summer, though. I'm sure the teachers will have something to say about that.

No, it will all be done online. My daughter teaches and is getting all her material ready. So no makeup. So far.

@Jordan2 , UPDATE: Now daughter is not sure. They will be doing online classes, but the higher ups have said two different things in the last hour. Everything is up in the air.

maryland governor hogan has announced that our public schools will be closed through the end of march at this point.

The Governor of PA just announced that all schools in the county that I live in (Montgomery County) are closed for 2 weeks effective tomorrow. Also, all entertanment venues, the YMCA, public places like the Libraries etc. will be closed. Hospitals, healthcare providers/clinics/pharmacies/supermarkets and transportation will continue to operate. He is asking all non essentail retailers to close.

Back during the blizzard of 78, we missed several weeks of school, and if I recall (I am old and maybe I don't remember right) they passed a law for just that year to change the number of days required, so as not to have to make all that up.

I'm guessing that a lot of states, along with internet learning, will be changing laws for the number of days to attend to lessen the burden, and not keep kids into the summer. Seems the only thing to do.

The problem with having all school work on line is that not every public school student has access to the internet. I am a speech/language pathologist who works in a school district. Our district is planning to close if the number of cases in our state increases significantly I live in northern Delaware and right now only have 4) or if a student of staff member in the district contracts the virus. Since the services we provide are legally mandated by a student's Individual Education Program we may be responsible for providing compensatory services for any services not provided due to school closures. For now we are preparing home programs for our students.

Ohio State University just announced that all classes for the remainder of the Spring semester were to be online and students will have live in their off campus housing or permanent homes.

The state will make determinations as far as making up the days. It can issue waivers to districts depending upon the circumstances, just like for weather closures.
