Please stay home

I keep on watching all the latest news as to what people should do. Why can't people just stay home anymore. We used to have to stay in our houses with measles and chicken pox. This is a killer virus and people are still traveling and going on vacations. It's just like in the winter when they warn people to stay home don't go out but what do they do they go out and get into accidents and kill innocent people. How would you like to be responsible for killing hundreds of people because you wouldn't stay home. This isn't just old people anymore. We need to send out a lot of prayers for all the people with this illness because respiratory viruses are very painful and they don't talk about treatment.

No...thousands have died from the flu & we carry on. I volunteer at hospitals & have no plans on stopping, if others want to hide in the house go ahead but I won't.

I understand the sentiment, @fresh kitty, but it is unrealistic. The vast majority of people cannot shelter in place. Very few actually have that luxury. And I don't think that it is warranted, at least for now.

Worse comes to worse, areas extremely impacted by this virus can call for strict measures. Let's hope that it doesn't get to that point.

So far, there are no cases real close to us. If it does start to spread our way, I will try to stay home more, and go out only when I really have to go somewhere. I'll limit, for example, our going out to eat, unnecessary shopping, large events, etc.

You know realistically everyone cannot just stay home.

The world goes on and it's very sad when people get sick and it's very sad when people die.

I think people should stay home if they are sick, but can you imagine if all of America stayed home for a week? What about the folks who work in retail, restaurants, beauty shops, and so on and so forth, who depend on customers to stay in business? People would go bankrupt. Would you want to go a week or two without getting your mail? Some of us would be in bad shape if medical personel stayed home. I don't think it can be done.

By all means, if someone wants to stay home do so, but we all cannot. I would go nuts if I had to stay cooped up for a week or two for one thing.

I admit, I have stocked up on stuff, but it is in case we are quarantined or dh an I end up with it. My dh has already been informed by his employer if we get quarantined, he will have to stay at his job. They do have a cafeteria and at least one nurse, so I guess there is that.

The worst thing we can do is panic & overreact. I will live my life as close to normal as I can.I will restrict my space when I have a reason to & not before.After that it's out of my hands.

Coronavirus is hardly a killer virus. The mortality rate is much lower than the ordinary flu. It does seem to be more contagious though but everyone who has had it and recovered says it was not that bad. The people who have died from this illness were either frail elderly or had other underlying chronic health issues. Everyone is drastically overreacting.

@BunSnoop, not that my husband and I are social butterflies or anything, but we are already rethinking unneccesary outside exposure. We are both in the vulnerable age bracket. Also, although we live in a very small beach town in SoCal. it is still near metropolitan L.A. Plus, even though travel must be done, I'm sure that we still get some tourist traffic.

People are active; have places to go and things to do. Families with children have activities. They are not sedentary seniors who can just sit and rock.

@Buffalogal47, unfortunately, this is not true. Even with the most positive stats, it is still much higher.

My BF just experienced a 24 hour 'bug' over this past weekend. He's better now, and back out driving for Uber. He can't just stay home and not make any money. Our bills still need to be paid. The cable, electric, gas, and house payment doesn't care if we are sick. They still want their money! During my working years, I always worked for companies that had 'sick pay'. More and more companies don't have that anymore. We do what we have to do.

@fresh kitty I understand somewhat what you are saying, but in most families with children both parents work outide the home and take their children to expensive daycare.

My mother in the 50s and 60s was ahead of her time--she did work outside the home full time, as did my dad. So people can't just stay home.

I am retired, as is my significant other, so we can pretty much stay home but people in service industries--restaurants, hotels, dry cleaning, grocery stores, pharmacies, bank employees, truck drivers, etc. can't do their job from home on a computer and get paid. Not even all office workers can.

And people in the hospitality industry don't get paid or tipped if they don't work. Manufacturing plant workers, the same.

I am praying for everyone here and in all the other countries that these problems will be resolved. We all just have to stay strong and not be overly anxious.

I'm controlling what I can about my own behavior, but I can't judge the actions of other people, except for those of the elected government at all levels, from local to federal. My DC mayor is doing a good job so far.

Humanity has always survived and we will get through this too.

This morining ... I went to physical therapy ... all the usual clients were there.

Afterwards, I stopped at the bagel shop for lunch .... it was crowded.

I'm going out again tomorrow ... where there are expected to be quite a few people.

I have things to do and places to go! Media is just hyping the virus for political reasons.

Yes, some people should stay home, but if we all did that, life as we know it, would come to an end

most of us have jobs and responsibilities, and life has to go on.

How rude can you be? I am a senior and have many friends, family, and acqaintances who are seniors. We do not "just sit and rock".

Seems like you don't work or do much--you might want to rethink your comment.

We were told not long ago that there were only 15 confirmed cases in the US and that soon they would all go poof and COVID-19 would disappear. In almost no time at all we're at 959 confirmed cases and 28 deaths. And rising.

Why does reality keep contradicting all the happy talk?

If this virus takes hold in your area, you are going to be inconvenienced -- at best. And it is going to be expensive. And everyone else will be in the same boat. Like any natural disaster. If you want to avoid that, cooperate with others and help maintain public health.

If you want to see what that kind of inconvenience looks like, look at footage from Italy and China.

Don't stay stuck in your house. Don't hide under the bed. But don't go looking for trouble either.
