Is it possible to ignore your own birthday?

I will be 59 next Sunday and I have uneasy feelings about this birthday. I would love to ignore it and act like it is not happening.....but that is hard to do. I guess i have a week to get "ok" with turning 59 (haha). Have any of you been able to truly ignore your birthday? I am open to learning from all of you.....

NOPE!

Matter of fact, since the age of 50 I celebrate the whole month! I am 69 yrs young. Not getting older, just better.

@Goldengate8361 I hear ya. I always would rather skip my birthday. My family insists on celebrating. I'm always glad when it's over and I don't have to think about it for a whole year. Hang in there, this too shall pass.........

I don't ignore my birthday, but I don't celebrate it. I don't mind getting older, it's just no big deal.

No cake, no ice cream and no gifts...I am just not into it.

I have to remind myself to acknowledge others birthdays because they are in to celebrating their day.

On my daughter's recent birthday she thanked me for giving birth to her. That moved me to tears and was a very big deal.

I LOVE this idea and what a much better way to look at birthdays as we all get older.

I never really was too bothered by birthdays but if I was, the year I turned 51 cured that forever. I woke up that morning at 5 a.m. by a doctor-I had had surgery the day before. He told me I had ovarian cancer. Happy Birthday to me, right? Fortunately it was found incredibly early thru a long ordeal of mishaps. I am 63 now and thankful for every birthday that I have had, since most women who hear those words (on their birthday or not) do not survive past 5 years. My hope for you is that you become comfortable with it being a joyous thing to celebrate and that it truly is just a number.

Seems like you're not ignoring it if you're posting about it... ;-)

Just think of it as a privilege and blessing that many don't have, and keep yourself and your mind occupied with other things.

You could even volunteer on that day; helping other living beings (including animals, of course) is the fastest way to get out of your own head.

I've felt that way at times and have never avoided it, but have been able to have it simpler and more low key

on the times i kind of feel like crawling into bed all day.

Also, I know for me, if I did avoid it all I would probably feel disappointed.

After all it is about letting those you love, letting them know they love you

And getting wonderful cards and maybe sharing a little something special really cheers you up.

A friend said that on her birthday this time she was going to make it all about those who gave her so much love and let them know how special they are-aw, she is such an inspiration.

I totally know how you feel. I hate numbers.

I'll be 59 + 2 at the end of April. In my head I'm much younger than my age. I'm healthy & intend to stay that way (until I'm not)

@Goldengate8361 Try thinking of it this way. It is the anniversary of your birth. Don't attach a number to it. According to Mirriam-Webster the definition of the word anniversary is: the annual recurrence of a date marking a notable event.

The day that you arrived on the planet was a notable event.

Be proud and glad you made it another year! Don't ever pass up a chance to celebrate. I always say a prayer of thanks on my birthday for my parents and all those relatives who came before me. Just think....if just one couple along the way in history hadn't fallen in love...you wouldn't be YOU! It's really quite amazing, when you think about it.

Every birthday is a blessing to me..... but I like to celebrate quietly....I get together with my sister and some friends and we do something fun, maybe a spring festival or something, then we go out to dinner...and woe to anyone that mentions to the waiter that its my birthday (I dont care for a birthday seranade)

.....I insist that there be NO GIFTS, if they insist, I tell them that the best gift they can give is to make a donation to my favorite local animal shelter....
