@ gardenman
Well stated. A person only needs so much furniture, especially if one has purchased quality. I appreciate help I get at places like Lazy Boy as well as choices to try.
With regard to closings, our store says it’s temporary for renovation. Guess we will eventually find out.

Received a letter in the mail yesterday that Lazy Boy is closing its store in my area. This is on a main, busy road that leads to the mall with lots of other stores like Target, REI, Hobby Lobby, etc. But I've only lived here for four years and have seen a lot of store closures on this road. Including: Payless Shoes, Fudruckers, Applebee's, Toy's R Us, Babies R Us, Thomasville Furniture Store, & Sears. There's probably more, I just can't remember. There's also a Bed, Bath and Beyond and a Pier 1 that I'm wondering is going to make it.

Retail is brutally Darwinian. La-Z-Boy stores have a hard time competing as their products are also sold in multiple other places, including other furniture stores. Do you go to a place where you can only buy La-Z-Boy or a store where you can buy them and other products and compare them to other products?

Very, very few retailers survive longterm. Whatever you do well, everyone else will copy. Areas where you're weak others will be strong. If you show there's a profit to be made selling whatever you're selling, others will look to take over your sales. Retail is not for the fainthearted.

Let's say you think there's a market for widgets, so you open a store selling widgets. You were right and sales take off. People are coming from all over to buy your widgets. You start to expand and open more stores selling widgets and your profits continue to grow. Then other stores notice your sales and say, "Hey, we should be selling widgets too!" Pretty soon everyone's selling widgets and your profits disappear. Before long you find yourself having to close your stores because people can now buy widgets everyplace.

Unless you have a unique product that people can't get elsewhere, you're going to be out-competed at some point and time. You'll need a certain volume of sales to stay in business and as the market gets saturated with people selling what you're selling, your sales will fall below the level you need to stay in business and there's nothing you can do about it. You have to be the best at what you do, offer a level of service others can't match, be flexible, adaptable, and even then, you might not survive. Retail is a brutal, brutal field.

So many stores have closed here. The resale stores here are the only ones that seem to be thriving, and they are everywhere.

And things do not have the quality they use to. The JC Penneys here doesn't sell real leather handbags or shoes like they use to. They are cheap. We all don't want cheap.
