Number of new cases rose by 60% overnight

The New York Times is reporting that the number of new cases of the coronavirus rose by 60% overnight. They are also reporting that infections are exceeding 4,500 cases and that a shortage of test kits had led experts to warn that the actual number of cases could be higher. NBC News is reporting that:

“Coronavirus cases have also been confirmed in China, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Vietnam, France, Australia, Malaysia, Nepal, Germany, Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Canada. More than 4,500 people have been sickened, mostly in China, and 106 have died since the start of the month...”Jan. 28, 2020, 11:03 AM EST

There is a discrepancy concerning reports from the Chinese health agency that say that the virus can be transmitted by persons that are asymtomatic. Initial testing of one family with early cases showed that a child tested positive for the virus and that this child had no symptoms. There is also controversy surrounding reports that a case has been found of a person that became ill with the virus in early December, preceding the cases that are connected with infections stemming from the market in Wunan. The patient did not visit the Wunan market. The CDC has issued a statement that it is not in agreement with the spread of the virus by asymptomatic patients. This could be due to the CDC requiring more evidence before accepting this from the Chinese health agency and other Chinese government agencies.

It doesn't matter if there are test kits or not; it's a virus. There's no cure, no vaccine. It's not particularly deadly. It's out there and it's not going away and we all know there will be many, may more cases before it's over. Depending on the patient's travel history and contacts; they quarantine and treat the symptoms. Guaranteed there are more case than reported, many times more just as there are with the flu because people get sick but they don't always go to doctor. Especially with something like this where the symptoms aren't much different than a cold.

China has seen an overnight increase in the number of cases of the fast-spreading coronavirus, identified as 2019-nCoV, that was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China and which is now being blamed for 25 deaths, according to a published report.

The Chinese National Health Commission said confirmed cases of this coronavirus have risen to 830, and 25 deaths are now attributed to the disease, the Associated Press reported.

Date	8 December 2019 – ongoing (1 month, 2 weeks and 6 days)
Location	First identified in Wuhan, Hubei, China
As of 28 January 2020:
4,685 confirmed cases with 106 deaths

Less than 3 % died which means you have over a 97% chance of recovery..That doesn't sound too scary to me

@cherry Just to piggyback in your comment, so far there have been zero deaths of the five confirmed US cases.

How many of the fatalities were of older people, young children, or people with compromised immune systems due to other health problems? Epidemics are how Nature culls the herd. That may be a cold way of looking at it, but that has always been Nature's way. Healthy people may get sick, but they survive. So far the mortality rate for coronavirus is around 3%. Which means most who catch it will recover, just like any other virus. The reason the Chinese are in a panic is because there are billions of people in their country. So even if there is only a 3% mortality rate that is a lot of people compared to other less populated countries.

@cherry @I just posted that there have been ZERO US deaths. I think that’s good. I also piggybacked on your percentage of deaths at just 3% of tested worldwide cases. I think those odds are good too. The news about this outbreak is not all negative. Keep being balanced in your posts. It’s a good thing. I will try to do the same. This helps allay unwarranted fears.

One, rather hysterical, woman I saw at Walmart the other morning was carrying on with saying something like: "People are dropping like flies all over the world because of this virus"...or something like that. To me this kind of behavior tells me that some people are fearing for their lives and that they apparently do not know the facts. I hate to say it, but I'm blaming the media for reactions such as that.

Of course the media is running with a story like this in part irresponsibly. Reporters stationed in China broadcasting their reports in masks adds to the drama.

And it's a story being played out in real time, particularly on social media.

Twitter and Facebook and You Tube can spread panic and dis/misinformation faster than anything we have seen before.

I agree with those who have said that the flu is a much more serious issue for us here, right now and something we are equipped to deal with.

Unfortunately, there are people that don’t bother to listen intently to reports. They just hear a tiny portion of a report and blow things out of proportion. They tune out the larger body of information, preferring to zoom into the fewest points possible.They are often uninformed or misinformed.

Being well-informed can be just as anxiety reducing as avoiding all information about an unpleasant subject.

You'd think people would be just as concerned about the flu virus, particularly since there is some protection through immunization. But we don't see the same type of scare factor as with the Coronavirus. And, we've had a heavy caseload this flu season.

World Health Organization (WHO) reports: "The flu causes up to 5 million cases of severe illness globally and kills up to 650,000 people annually."

“When we think about the relative danger of this new coronavirus and influenza, there’s just no comparison,” Dr. William Schaffner, professor of preventive medicine and health policy at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, shared with Kaiser Health News. “Coronavirus will be a blip on the horizon in comparison. The risk is trivial.”

I tend to agree, at least at this point, unless this virus morphs into something more deadly.
