According to Google this restaurant has 79 locations with headquarters in Maryland. I've never heard of it. Have you eaten there?

My sister and her adult granddaughter had lunch there Friday. She said right at noon, suddenly the Star Spangle Banner burst forth on the PA sysyem, every one dutifully stood with hand over heart and sang the National Anthem.

I thought this a very strange thing to do in a public restaurant during a meal. What do you think?

Might have something to do with the fact that they often sponsor fundraising events to support military and public response forces. The restaurants are decorated to honor local military, police, and firefighting personnel.

You made me look! I don't think it's strange at all since they have made it their mission to honor the military, police and first responders. I don't think most customers walk in blindly without knowing that at noon the National Anthem will be playing.

I live in MD, we have a Mission BBQ in my neighborhood. Very dedicated to the military. My DH likes it a lot better than I do, it is a bit pricey for a fast food restaurant.

i am in maryland, but have never been inside a mission bbq.

i have had their food though and it is quite good......lots of people/groups have them cater events.i always enjoy a good bbq.

@JaneMarple. My sister surely didn't; she was blindsided by it. Her granddaughter was in the restroom changing her baby and missed the whole thing.

There's one in Evansville, In my sister has ate there and says they do that.

Said the ribs were too salty.

@Kachina624 Yes, I too think it's sort of strange... There are apparently several of them in my region, but I'd never heard of them before your post. Their mission is their choice and I'm sure it's laudable, but I'll now know that if I ever decide to try them out, unlikely though that is, I'll avoid the lunch hour. Nothing wrong with a display of patriotism, but it should be a matter of individual choice, which would not, for me, be when I'm dining out.

@stevieb. There's a time and place for everything and I think right in the middle of peoples' meals is not the time for a rousing show of patriotism.

We have one not too far from us and go once in a while. I like the food - and the choice of sauces is good. I think it's great that they honor the military and first responders. I think they told us the chain started in Maryland. We've only been for dinner, but there is a big sign on the door about standing when they play the National Anthem at noon. I have no problem with it. Although I've never seen it I would imagine people can stand or sit if they want. I can't imagine people bothering anyone who does not stand. But if you go into the restaurant you can expect it. I imagine someone who disagreed with this policy would leave.

What I find strange is this post. I am quite certain that Maryland is, indeed, in the United States of America, where most restaurants ARE public and the Star SpangleD Banner is the national anthem. If it offends you to support first responders and/or this nation in a public manner, just stay away.

We go the one in Winter Springs, Florida. I think it is great to hear the National Anthem played. We were also there on Veterans Day and the place was filled with military veterans. My husband served in Vietnam, and the veterans were given a free lunch. Maybe because there are so many retirees in this location that the restaurant is so popular with people who appreciate the military and first responders. My son and many of his friends who are a younger generation think this is a really good idea too.

I think it is great. I love the National anthem. We have at least one of those restaurants and had no idea what they stood for. We have so many barbeque restaurants. My husband has many years of govenment and military service so when I tell him he will want to go there.

With some really strange music being played in restaurants I've frequented, hearing the National Anthem wouldn't bother me in the least. I'd follow the crowd as far as standing or remaining seated since I'm not aware of what customers typically do. Without a doubt, I'd put my fork down during the anthem.

We have several here in Maryland. We've been going to them for a long time - usually takeout. Great bbq and yes - their mission is to support first responders and the military. They donate quite a bit from what I've read. Tons of military insignia and signs around each location. On the rare occasion we go for lunch - yes we know the national anthem is always played at noon and all work and eating stops and everyone stands for a brief time to pay respect. We like that. It doesn't take long at all.

I went once when it first opened in my area, it was okay.

If you've ever been to Roadside America in Shartlesville, PA you get a great Kate Smith singing God Bless America every 30 minutes.

And the climax of any trip to Roadside America is the every-half-hour Sound and Light show. Night falls over the sleepy town, and a patriotic multimedia slide show illuminates one wall. Over the decades, the color has been accidentally cooked out of the show, which runs on six 1950s style projectors that each hold one slide. It is nonetheless moving when the washed-out images of the Statue of Liberty, Jesus and the American flag are juxtaposed as Kate Smith sings "God Bless America."
