A ? about backing out of a parking space.

This happenes more and more where I live and the state I just moved from. When backing out of a parking space, I always look both ways twice. Then I slowly back up and am at least half way out, usually 3/4 and once all the way out and was ready to go forward and a car will come zipping by right behind me!

I have seen it happen to others as well. It scares the daylights out of me! Granted I've been driving for 40 years but I was taught to let someone finish backing out!

You also put your life in your hands when walking into a store and NO ONE stops at the stop signs at the crosswalk!

You must have been parked at my grocery store. They are horrible there. 2 of the bag boys have been hit over the years!,, one had his arm broken!

Same here. Also, I can't understand why people have to drive so fast in a parking lot when they are only going about 100 feet to go into a parking spot. Also if you walking from a store and need to cross in the parking lot, most people will not stop for you to cross.

What also annoys me is drivers who are on the phone while backing out of the parking space.
What's so urgent that they can't wait until they finish backing out before picking up their phones.

Well I live in Northern Va and honey, when you even get in your car here, you take your life in your hands.

Everyone zips around and over you if they can.

It's a total lack of respect for others. People seem to think "get out of the way, I'm a' comin'". Ugh!

That happens to me all of the time. Wanna get really afraid! Go to a post office. Backing out...they'll almost hit a parked car while you're backing out just to get around you....and we're all together at the stop sign or the red light. Sometimes I'll wave to them like, "Well...here we all are".

It's terrible the way everyone is in a hurry.

One of the worst times is "GOD forbid you're out trying to get home and it's rush hour (going home)."

These people are on their way home and they zip in and out of traffic just to get home...to get home.

Phew! Now I'm worked up! Ha! That exact scenario you mentioned happened to me today. Two times I had to back out of a shopping strip mall (the worst). People were so close to me, I couldn't open my car door all of the way (I have 2 fake knees so doors have to be wide to swing in).

Anyway, I'm going to go meditate for a few minutes. Excuse me.

Please don't let them get to you. You'll probably be around a lot longer than these idiots because the way they drive things aren't looking good for them to have a long life-line. Ha!

Parking lots & driveways, I NEVER pull in. I ALWAYS back in. I want to see the cars driving towards me left and/or right. They have the right of way, not me.

That's one of the reasons why I always look for a parking spot in which I can drive straight out rather than back out, even if I have to walk much further to the store. It's worth it!

I never park where I have to back out. I always drive through or back into a spot. People nowadays are SO rude and in such a big hurry, they don't have the courtesy to let you back out.

I’m afraid it’s about the same no matter where you live now. It’s just like going online and saying something nasty to or about someone else. They would never say it to that person face to face; when someone is behind the wheel, they think nothing of cutting someone off and then they keep going...knowing they won’t see you face to face.

Honestly, backing in is a peeve of mine, but I really am starting to get it. Except in my previous state, people get rightbehindyouthisclose so there is no backing in, only for them.

Edited to add, if you are good at backing in, that's great, but not everyone is.

I am a senior citizen (even though I hate that term), but find seniors to be extremely rude and aggressive drivers in my area.

I HATE backing up! especially at the Dump!

A couple years ago, I was backing up to the platform. A couple little old ladies - cute - were emptying their stuff from their trunk. They were both on the platform a car space between us (always leave a parking space - will explain why later). The back of my jeep was full of trashbags as I backed towards platform using my driver's side mirror. All at once, I was halfway backed up and a voice in my head yelled STOP! So, without knowing why I did - it was like I became frozen in place! I got out of my jeep and lo and behold, one of those ladies was off the other end of the platform and walking towards the back corner of my vehicle! I almost fell over - she was right in that blind spot!!! The other lady stopped her - think she must have had dementia the way she talked to her - and profusely thanked me for stopping! I was totally freaked out but just smiled and said no problem. Then, around the other side where newpapers and boxes get dumped - they were there! So, I just got out of my car and tossed their stuff for them before doing my stuff. So, though it could have been a disasterous accident, we all went home smiling.

I always leave a parking space before backing in 'cause once some guy opened his car door as I was backiing up. I stopped in time. He was over on the passenger side of y vhicle. I asked my friend who worked inside the building there if he saw what happenned. He said yes ad told me that people do that all the time - for insurance purposes. So, I make sure no one is beside me when backing in.

I try to always park so I can drive out. At Target a couple of times I've seen some close calls with people walking right behind a vehicle backing up.

A habit of mine is going shopping at Target and Walmart early on Sunday mornings. Plenty of open parking.

Oh trust me, it's all ages. We have what we call snowbirds, most that I see are really careful. But it is all ages.

The other day there was a lady in a SUV and a car behind her. It was very busy and she was stopped at the stop sign in front of the store letting people cross. This moron behind her kept laying on his horn! I took extra time to cross and waved at her. All of a sudden this guy whipped around almost hitting people crossing. He had to slam on his breaks! By gosh, he was going to kill someone.

If any of you know someone that designs parking lots, my idea is there to be no driving in front of the store. Enter the parking lot from the rear and leave from the rear.

I have no problem getting out of my car and giving people a piece of my mind. Been there, done that. They think they can get away with what they are doing and having someone actually hold them accountable is something they don't expect. After I confront them, they have nothing to say. Idiots.

Imagine being a small passenger car and being completely blinded by the larger cars next to you.

It never ceases to amaze me when I deliberately park away from everyone to avoid just that that a large suv or truck just has to park next to my small car despite other open parking spaces.

Little cars can't see over big ones especially when backing out. If you drive a large vehicle and have the option to leave a small car alone, please be courteous and let us drive safe too.
