Anyone know the answer to this 2nd grade math problem for me

I am babysitting and this is one of the problems my granddaughter has:

"Ethan made a 10 to figure out the sum for 9+3. Explain Ethans thinking."

No wonder kids can't do math.....

@Nataliesgramma This common core math is the bane of my existence. I've spent hours googling how to do something so I could help my granddaughter. It is totally confusing and I see no purpose in it at all. Wait until 4th grade!! I'm ready to hire a tutor.

I would assume that it means that he "made a 10" by taking one away from the 3 (so, then, 10 + 2) to get the total of 12.

Watch the Make 10 Strategy for Addition on YouTube. My granddaughters went through this nonsense so we taught them the "old" way at home...both excel in math.

@Nataliesgramma if this is common core, don't expect to understand it. It is ridiculous!!!! Many schools don't even teach times tables!!!! I have no idea who comes up with this stuff.

@kitcat51 I had no idea how confusing this common core math system was until I tried to help my granddaughter. Sadly, we hung on until 4th grade, but things have taken a turn for the worse this year. I want so badly to show her how easy some of the problems really are without adding the complications, but, she tells me "No Grandma, that's not the way the teacher told us to do it." She is such a bright child, It breaks my heart seeing her fall behind because of this nonesense.

I first texted my nephew wo is an Aeronautical engineer...graduated in the top of hisclass at Case Western Reserve......he didn't know...

Said they started teaching this Common core after he left

@occasionalrain This year, for both of us. Most certainly for me, but she didn't have a great teacher in 3rd grade, so she came into 4th grade already lacking some understanding of the basics.

@LadyAmara Isn't it a shame that one must go to youtube to have a second grade math problem explained. It's ridiculous to expect children to understand the basics of math when it's this complicated.

we can then say the school system funded by the govt is teaching us this math -

I never "got" math! So this crazy new math has me totally befuddled. I'm sorry, but 9+3=12. How it can possibly be 10 doesn't make sense. Perhaps the education system doesn't want children who don't understand math, like me, to be correct, even when they're wrong! Kind of like sports when everyone gets a trophy because they participated. No one wins or loses. Not a real life outcome.

This makes perfect sense to me, and it's how I figure things out quickly in my head when numbers get larger. It's much better than memorization.

It's a pet peeve of mine when people complain about "common core math" without understanding what it means. Just because you were taught a certain way doesn't make it the right or best way. I happen to love the way my son is taught math now, but it is how I process math in my brain, so I totally get it. He can quickly figure things out without writing it out and carrying this number over and adding it, etc.

Instead of dismissing it outright, do some reasearch into the reasoning behind teaching math this way.

jonbon is correct. The thought is that it is easier to make a "10" and then add to that.

So take "1" from the"3", give it to the "9" to make it "10" and then just add the remaining "2" to get the correct answer of "12".

I work in an elementary school and work one on one with students for Math.

Wait until you see how they want students to divide with partial quotients!
