No way would I do anything like that through Craig's List or Facebook. I refuse to use Craig's List at all. All sorts of horror stories.

kivah, I feel sorry for you to have to rent out a room to a stranger. Sounds awful!!!! I would stay clear of both those sites. Good luck.

I wouldn't use a site at all.

I don't know if I'd even use a friend's recommendation. A neighbor (and friend) of mine asked me several years ago if I'd want to rent out a room to a great guy he knew from Church who needed a place. I had no interest at all in renting out a room, but this guy turned out to be a thief and drug dealer.

Tread very carefully.

Craigslist varies by what part of the country you're in. For my sister in AZ, Craigslist is a legit, respectable site.

But in my city you only consult it if you're looking for pimps, stolen car parts, children for sale, and drug dealers.

Call and ask your local police dept if advertising in/contacting someone you found on Craigslist is a good idea in your area.

If your're religiously active, there may be a list. Also, young ladies that work are often in need of a room. Ask your hairdresser too.

Just remember when you allow someone to live in your house whether it’s one room or the whole house you need to have a rental agreement to protect yourself. Once someone moves into your house they have legal rights and it could be very very difficult to get them to leave! My husband and I have owned several single-family homes that we have rented out for over 30 years. A potential renter may seem very pleasant at first but once they have moved in they could make your life very miserable. We have had a few evections, but we also have a great tenant who has lived in one of our houses for 28 years. Good luck.

@kivah You could go about this via a property management company, and they do the screening and take care of the paperwork. They do take a cut of the rent, usually 10%. You can decide if this is worth it, to you.

When I was student teaching, I and two other student teachers rented rooms from a widow. I remember we had kitchen privileges. I don't remember anything other than writing lessen plans.

Air b and b may rent for long term, I am not sure.

I'd advertise in student listings for graduate student or professional. Also Zillow lists rooms for rent. Just make sure you do a background check.

You might consider using your room as an air bnb.
If you take proper precautions I don't think there is any reason to be overly concerned.

Of course, there are reasons to be overly concerned about giving some complete stranger access to your home! In this day, it makes no sense at all. The risk are just too great. You especially would not want a college student or any young person! If you are going to take that risk, look for someone similar to yourself.

Do you have garage space to rent if you can't find a boarder?

It's a popular thing to do here. Many people looking to store their snowmobiles, ski doo's or 4wheelers for the off season.

I have no Next Door here, either. CL can be sketchy but safer than the city.

There are some reputable realtors in our area who sell and lease homes. They also sometimes will match those who can’t afford to rent an entire house to those who have rooms to rent. A reputable way to go as they are thoroughly screened. Stay away from Craigslist. No one reputable is going to be looking for a room to rent there.

Well, I guess I'm the exception to the rule. I've had GREAT luck with CL finding roommates, back in the day. I've also had good luck finding tenants more recently. Of course, never forget to do the background & credit checks, regardless of where you find potential people.

Never heard of "Next door".
