Retired 5 years ago at age 55 after putting in a 30-year increasingly intense career with local government. I left when I had maxed out my good benefits. I saved and paid off debt and went thru an exhaustive helpful budget/forecast exercise with my financial advisor to be sure we’re ok. It’s complicated. DH (also 60) is working FT but downshifting to 4days a week later this year. Occasionally I miss socializing and getting more dressed up and some of the old mental challenges...but overall my retirement is very good. I’m exercising, cooking healthy, some limited eldercare downstate, traveling a lot to wonderful places, reading more with a local book club, doing a lot of art museums, & volunteering. I have looked for the “right” part-time job but can never get them to commit to just weekday hours and I want to be with DH on the weekends- maybe later. Another realization for us is we’ll probably not move away from our urban/suburban home due to proximity to excellent health care providers.

I retired in my mid 50s, mostly due to the political climate in my state at the time, something which had never before affected my career of 30+ years.

It enabled me to have a nice long retirement, although I'm now very bored. I can't do much due to some physical limitations and my small family is 1800 miles away so I'm pretty much alone.

No, I'm not sorry I retired. I felt I had no choice and my elderly patents, now deceased, needed my help.

I retired 3 months shy of 62. It was time, however I was persuaded to work per diem I did this for 4 years, just working when they needed coverage. I finally retired completely, and never regretted it.

I retired at 54 I had already been working at my job 35 years and had just had it. I did have my job on the farm so I never really retired. I didn't draw a pension from my job until I was 65 any way, but took social security at 62.

Still working. I would love to retire, but I just can't place the burden and worry of providing health care coverage on my husband. If I quit working and he ever lost his job, we'd have no insurace. I can't take that chance or put that responsibility on him. I did quit traveling for work, though, and now work every day at home. What a relief that is.

I had three major careers but they were all under the DoD (Federal government). I retired right after I turned 63 (DH retired concurrently when he has 56 with serious health issues). It was the right move for me/us. We moved from CA to AZ and have travelled all over the world and two brands came shortly after retirement.

I had a brain aneurysm when I was 58; that ended my public school teaching career. I certainly had planned on working several more years.

As it turned out, though, I got involved with OLLI (a nationwide senior citizen organization) and began my volunteer teaching career. I am thoroughly enjoying this phase of life!

I left my office job when my son was born 27 years ago. But I've been managing our rental properties. It's been stressful keeping the properties rented, as well as chasing tenants for their rent checks. Over the years I've had to evict a couple of tenants. That wasn't fun.

My DH is 70 years old. He's still working, though mostly from home.My goal is to get him to set a retirement date. He doesn't seem to want to retire.I don't need any more money.I need him.

At this point he's saying he wants to work 17 more months until I turn 65 & become Medicare eligible. That would put him at 72. We'll see.

I retired at 62 from full time work & at 64 from part time work. SO glad I did. 1 1/2 years later I was in the hospital thinking I had a bad case of the flu. Instead I was septic & was told I might not make it. I was transfered to a different hospital & found out I had stage 4 incuarable cancer. The hospital doctor said I had 1 possibly 2 years to live. That was 4 years ago! Only 10% make it to 5 years with this type of cancer so my days are probably numbered. I'm so thankful that I was old enough to have Medicare plus we have great health care insurance. Without those I would have chosen not to bankrupt my family with treatment. We never know what is planned for us. Enjoy what you have while you have it.

I was 50. At first it was great! I could stay up late, get up when I wanted to, clean the house from top to bottom, shop during the week instead of doing everying on the weekend, preparing really nice dinners. After about 3 months all the things around the house were done and I realized the friends I wanted to go to lunch with or shop with were still working. I volunteered at the hospital for 2 years on Friday's from 12 noon to 4pm. I was used to interacting with people so I got a part-time job and loved it. It was totally different from my full time job I retired from. After a couple of years I was ready to stay home full time.

I never regretted doing so and now I know I did all I could for my lovely Mother.

@Kachina624 wrote:

You are a miracle @suzykee!!

I retired when I was 55. I loved my job, but changes at work made it impossible to not be stressed. I would get up every morning and dread going to work. The work environment was horrible and many of my coworkers were out 30 days at a time for mental stress. Some quit and many were fired because they were calling off sick way too often.

One Sunday night I decided I had enough. So, on Monday morning I went to work and handed in my resignation and walked out. I had a couple of weeks vacation time, so I took vacation right there and then. That gave HR time to process my retirement request.

I never regretted it.

I am also hair stylist and own my own salon. Many years ago, I hired a manager and I went to work in health insurance. I still own the shop, so I have income to fall back on. I have had to hire new managers over the years. It is difficult to find a stylist with a manager or teacher license which is required, but it has been profitable.

I love my low stress life now.
