Consignment store

Joined a consignment shop about two years ago to attempt to reimburse my wallet of things I just no longer needed/used. I am striving for minimalism. Coach, Dooney's and mishmash of other items. Probably making about 2- 5% back on the purses what initial cost was. And I'm feeling good that someone gets to enjoy these items and 'finds' when they thrift shop. Plus getting something back.
I also had alot of clothing w/tags which they love taking. Closets are getting managable.

Went through the Temptations bakeware phase, gave alot away, took some to consignment. I still love her pieces, just overbought. I leave an empty bin in a spare bedroom and just add brand new gently used items to and then take it in.

I always give family first dibs if anybody wants anything or needs it.

Anyway i was dropping items off a week before Christmas and they happened to be pricing a whole bunch of brand new items. A few thousand dollars worth of Beekman (not kidding) as they were able to do an actual display in a hutch type cupboard. Joy Mangano things, luggage, etc, one can only imagine. Brand new shopping channel items never to be opened or used. The daughter called them, they took what they could but were limited on space so she was calling around different thrift/consignment shops to take her mothers purchases to.

(On a side note, I have always shopped thrift and consignment shops so it comes full circle. I was able to buy a Beekman Honeyed Grapefruit Body Cream. The scent and cream is lovely.)

It's nice to sell items that you no longer use and make some money! You may not be getting much for your things but if you have a lot it can add up!

I sold when I cleaned out my closet for a few years to a local women's clothing consignment store. I ended up making $600.00 over a few seasons. I also store the items i plan on selling in a spare bedroom. Spring items will be selling soon so I'm going to go over my things to see what I have to sell in a month or so.

I wish we had those types of consignment shops here (in my area without driving 45+ minutes).

I went thru a Coach, Vera Bradley travel, Dooney Phase -- all pieces (some still with tags) are sitting in box☹️. I'm hoping to sell at Community Sale of course, no where near what I paid but will be out of here!

Temptations: I see them at almost every estate sale I go to. Most sets are priced under $20 and single pieces as low as $5. And sets of Lock N Locks are always at estate sales...I have too many! Next thing to sell OR donate!

I sell a lot of mine at our Community sale or on Nextdoor. I usually get a good price for them. I have more than I can use -- it was my addiction at one time😉. Now I no longer use 1/3 of the pieces even for entertaining!

would love to go to your consignment shop! Beekman count me in! We have HSN outlet full of Joy Mangano, Slinky Brand & more -- I've stopped there but I don't need anymore "stuff" even if it's great price!

I hear ya. I went through so many buying phases in my life, but not going to beat myself up over it. Wish I had that money now though, lol. I love to shop. I can be tired as anything and if someone says do you want to run to the store, I spring right up. But now I can 'mission' shop. Just go for what I need. I was never like that, always browsed and picked up other items.

When you know better, you do better.

I have a terrific consignment store in my area that I take things to. They've been in business 39 years and have 2 locations in Metro Atlanta, with the smaller location being really close to my house.

I've done very well with them the last two years. You just have to realize though that you aren't getting anything even remotely close to what you paid for an item, but it's better than getting nothing.

She has people consign with her from all over the country. Also has an online site that she sells from.

Hi, its 50 %. They display it for 60-or 90 days (can't remember which) and then you have the option pick up the unsold items. I never do.

Oh I still love to look and shop. 3 years ago we downsized from a 4 bedroom colonial to 1300 sq ft ranch. So many items when we were packing, got donated or given to the kids, or taken to the curb.
I look at the listing of this new-to-us home, and see that glorious empty basement and just wish it still looked that way. Judging by my cellar and every other nook & cranny, I still had kept too much 'stuff'. (Thought I'd still be entertaining but lives are busy and many ppl prefer to stay home). Which is fine.
But everybody has to get to that point themselves. You couldn't have convinced me 5 years ago.

I started going through stuff in early fall.... had a car load ...

pared down Hollowen and Christmas decorations ... O.K.

I'll confess ... Valentines and Easter too .....

It even got to the point I went and cleared out my recipes ...

I have favorites .. and there were a lot in there I was never

going to make ....it was a fun time ....

I actually had two coats ... I live in Florida and kept them just

in case .. when I tried them on my daughter and i were on

the floor laughing ....and of course I got the " MOTHER " !!!!

They went out ......

I think 50% is pretty common.

The consignment clothing store that I take things to uses about 30% of the original price as a starting price. So $100 item sells for $30 and you get $15.

I've seen some stores take only $40% of luxury items.

Remember that most will have you sign an agreement that they are not responsible for lost (shop lifted) items. So if you think you ever want it back or if very valuable item, think twice about consignment stores.

One time I went in to pick up a Kate Spade bag. It was not on the floor? The sales gals said "oh, its in the back bc Susie Q (employee) is going to buy it when it goes on mark down."

@LoveMyBaby , @Mom2Dogs : You are both doing better than l am re: the percentage you keep. I only get back 40% of the selling price. The items are kept for 2 months, then whatever doesn’t sell can be picked up, or she will donate it to charity.

Oh your daughter must know my son ... I bought a nice winter coat from Q. Had it delivered to NJ address -- STILL sitting in the closet -- I haven't even used it on my visits to NJ....

I see it going into donation box real soon!
