Keeping hope alive at our house. The statement reflects many attitudes but is defeatist. I don't believe we should view the world with rose-colored glasses, but staying open minded and making efforts to improve each year sounds promising.

Well that certainly is depressing.

Even if circumstances around me are awful in terms of local and world news,

I try to make the immediate world I live in the best and most postive, helpful, and encouraging I can, for myself and those I come in contact with.

Even more so because of all the incredibly sad things in our world today.

And when tragedy strikes our own lives, I hope we have the love and support of our family and or friends.

I just couldn't live feeling the way this person feels every day.

This person requires an attitude adjustment. Perhaps if he did more for others and less for himself he'd enjoy life more. Random acts of kindness come to mind.

People don't hate without a reason and those who promote entitlement provide reason for some. When did we stop believing in self reliance? It's easy to dismiss another's attitude as just wrong, harder to to look at situations from their perspective.

Humans are flawed, and therefore the world is flawed, but that doesn't mean there isn't plenty to be happy about as well as sad. I agree that defeatist thinking is not productive. Hope the person who wrote that can develop a better, more hopeful and balanced perspective.

Poor Luann (er...Greg). She's suffering from a severe case of ingratitude. Yes, "people suffer from hunger, hate, and war and a hundred other problems." Instead of bemoaning the state of the world and throwing up her hands at it in a spasm of virtue-signalling, maybe she could try doing something practical and helpful in her small corner of it -- like being kind to an unkind neighbor, or biting her tongue when she herself is tempted to say, as she puts it, "My opinion's always right, and yours is always wrong." It's a start.

Tackling the world's woes is daunting, which is why it's important for me to focus on the positive impact one can make as an individual and to join or contribute to organizations that pool resources to help others. People face challenges all over the world and still find ways to endure and some even thrive. The poem's message of "why even try" is to me an excuse for doing nothing.

I think that Greg is being very realistic and honest about the world that we live in.

I guess some people can't handle that.

The year will change, but the problems will still be there.

Those who say that they won't be, are living in denial.
