New Gordmans Store

We have a new Gordmans near us and I went last week when they opened at 9 am. First time I had been in since they opened in the Summer.

I was followed around the entire store like a Criminal or a Shoplifter!

I gave them no reason to follow me at all. I felt like saying hey, i promise I wont shoplift lol.

Is this normal at these Gordman Stores?

I liked the selection and think its a nice place.

What sort of store is Gordmans? I do not believe we have any in our area.

I was briefly employed at a Goody's store that has since become a Gordman's.

Many years ago, I worked at a Maurices where I was trained to actively seek the sale, and we did end up following our customers around. We got credit for the sale and didn't want another clerk to usurp our customer.

We helped the customer in the dressing room and took discarded merchandise back to the floor, too. This also helped control "shrinkage".

Goody's however, were totally different. We were not to do any of those things (30 years later). In fact, even if we suspected shoplifting, we were to let it go.

When Gordman's came, I noticed that they had openings for "security", so maybe the philosophy on letting shoplifters go has changed.

In some stores I'd welcome that! Even with so many turning to the Internet, I've been in a few places recently where the staff was so overwhelmed, it was hard to find someone just to point in the right direction.

I have never heard of the store. I would not allow ANYONE to follow me around. I'd seek out a store manager or supervisor and ask for help. If it was a store employee following me around, I'd never return.

The Bealls in my area is closing. A Gordman's will replace it. It's the same location so I assumed it is a clothing store similar to Bealls. It is difficult to find a sales person in either Bealls.

Years ago, I can recall sales people ready to "pounce" on the next person to enter the store and follow them around. Usually in the specialty stores. Whenever that happened to me, I turned around and left.

To be honest, I had great difficulty "selling" this way; but Maurices, at the time, was a pretty good place to work, gave annual raises, and a 401K plan, even for part-timers.

I think our regular customers got used to our environment. Once in a very great while some one would call and say that they had felt harassed. In that case, we were instructed to back-off.

And sometimes, people really did want help finding an outfit or gift.

I always got the feeling that the company wanted us to mimic what you might expect in an exclusive designer's store, or something like that. Which we were far from, being located in a more or less rural area.

Our sales were measured in "per hour" and we were encouraged to compete for the sale.

Bealls is part of the same chain as Goody's which is Stage Stores.

Stage bought out Gordman's in the last year or so.

As I understand it Goody’s and Beall’s are both part of the Stage family of stores which Gordman’s is now a part of too. Some Peebles stores, another member of the family, are changing over to Gordman's too.

The store in our area began as Stage, then was Peebles, then Goody's, now a Gordman's. I think its been in the same location for 25 years.

The Peebles in Ocean City Md. closed and will be reopening as a Gordmans in spring 2020.
