I didn't watch but reading my local Patch online I found out she's a native from my town. I did read about her science experiment as her "talent". I'll have to see if it's on YouTube.

Not sure about the science experiment either and though I didn't watch the suppopsed talent, I suspect it was not 'high' chemistry, but was ostensibly showy and enough to convince neophyte judges she was a bright woman, which she seems to be. As noted, I didn't watch most of the show, but thought she was probably a good pick. I'm not sure there's a great deal of discernible difference, past a point, between many of the contestants. She was attractive, articulate and accomplished and clearly impressed several panels of judges enough to win. As a Virginian myself, I was glad she did.

@Annabellethecat66 She poured potassium iodide into three separate flasks that contained hydrogen peroxide, food coloring, and dish soap. It demonstrated the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide.

She's studying for a doctor of pharmacy degree at Virginia Commonwealth University

Miss America no longer has a swimsuit or evening gown competition. The focus is on education, careers, and interviews.

She has loved science since she was a kid and wants to show children how fun and interesting it is.

So is it no longer a BEAUTY pageant? Are the contestants in the same range of physical attributes as the population? And if it is now about education, intelligence, and personality, why just women?

@suzyQ3 So far it's still "Miss" America, but if you watched, one contestant was asked a similar question and said it should be open to the LGBTQ community.

Well, it's not packing a suitcase, but I guess pouring stuff into other stuff is what's taken for talent these days.

@suzyQ3 There is a Mr. America contest but I think it's about body building. There's also one I found snooping on Google called Mr. United States oriented toward seeking out well-rounded young men. Go figure. lol

@Shanus: I think the best candidate son (especially with the revised "Miss America 2.0" . The winning candidate was beautiful and articulate and I loved her science presentation (better than baton twirling and the novice jazz dancer). There was a large variety of ethnicities but still plenty of blondes! A number of contestants wouldn't have been considered beauties when I was in my twenties but they were all cute.

I can't even recall the last time I watched a beauty pageant, @Shanus

While it's nice that a contestant would like more diversity, that, IMO, is not the basic problem I have with these shows.

I felt good about her winning. It was not rocket science but she did grab the attention of the audience. She had a lot of poise. I have to say there were a lot of great candidates and I would not want to judge that.

GIven the $50,000 scholarship prize, along with other winnings, and given the fact that the young woman who won is seeking multiple advanced degrees, I'm sure she's delighted there's still a Miss America and that she impressed the judges sufficiently to win.

I haven't watched Miss America in years. It was strange. I liked the winner but she talked so fast sometimes I couldn't understand her. After her reign, she could get a job as a host at QVC. I would rather have seen the ball gowns. Thought the science experiment was weird as talent and the baton twirling was high schoolish. Don't think I would watch again.

Give me a break...that experiment is done in 9th grade. I think beauty pageants, for lack of a better term, are becoming obsolete. They get so little attention most people don’t even know they are happening, including me. I think Miss World or something was crowned a week or so ago...I doubt many will miss them.

I do know that some transgender contestants have entered and been considered for previous pageants, so that may be a reason for eliminating some of the categories...and the reason for adding others.
