Balloon Releases

Balloon releases harm the environment, can cause power outages, and worst of all, kill wildlife on land, in sea, and in the air. Balloons don't carry notes to Heaven and they honor no one.

Better to plant a tree, put a bench in a park, make a donation, give blood, volunteer.

Right. On the news sometimes you will hear up next a heart

warming story of a child sending a note to his/her late family

member. They should be stopped. People don't think when

they do these.

I agree so very much!! I wish people would realize the damage those balloons are causing before they release them to the environment, and to the animals that are suffering and dying because of them! I agree with the person who said plant a tree, or give a donation, those are ways to honor someone!!!

Is helium becoming hard to find? I read somewhere that helium is not being replaced in the earth and it's become sparse...?? It's not something that can be reproduced but a gas that has to be 'mined'. Helium is used for some very important medical procedures from what I understand..

I feel the same about the lighted lanterns that are sent up. Our friends on the opposite street did that one night and then worried when the lanterns went thru the neighborhood instead of over the water and golf course. No fun when you are standing there wondering if you're going to return home to find your roof or trees on fire.

Yes, I chewed them out about that one. Never send somethng up unless you have the control to bring it down. So much damage can be done just because you think it would be sentimental, sweet, loving, fun. etc. It's not fun for the animals, wildlife, nature, or people that could suffer because you needed to display.

Oh, it's just a few, can't hurt anything. Bull!

My SIL purchased baloons for our kids to send to my FIL after he passed just before Christmas. That was 11 years ago, now my MIL feels the need to purchase balloons every year. I personally hate the tradition not only because of the trash but also because 11 years later only 3 out of the 9 grandchildren remember or knew my FIL.

Last year my nephew suggested writing the letters and burning them in a fire. As an outdoorsman, my FIL would appreciate a fire. Fingers crossed we can convince my MIL not to purchase balloons this year.

Releasing white doves at weddings is worse. Poor doves can’t defend themselves and are usually eaten.

I totally agree with the posts about the balloons and the doves. On a related issue, please take the time to cut into small pieces the plastic rings that hold together the six or eight packs of soda or other beverages. We live at a huge sailing lake and have seen the damage done when a waterfowl get his head in one of the rings, can't get it off and then grows to a point that he is choked. It is simple to separate the rings and cut them into small pieces before putting them in the trash.

@minkbunny Haven’t purchased anything lately with these plastic rings, but I have always cut them up so there are no more circles.

@occasionalrain , totally agree! If you spend any time in the woods of PA you understand how these balloons never go away. They tangle in high branches and hang there year after year. No one can reach them and they don’t seem to ever break down. ☹️
