Vanilla Visa Gift Cards

Someone gave me a $50 gift card for my birthday. I have registered the card on their website, have given it a zip code like they asked. No online retailer will acknowledge the card, it says it's not valid. I have called CS twice, they said the card is good to use ( I had to put the zip code through three separate times). Well it is not good to go, I have read people have had trouble with the card, I'm beginning to think this is a scam. The card company said I should investigate why the the retailer isn't accepting the card, I have used gift cards online before with never a problem.

@Jordan2 I would tell the person who gave it to you that you are

having issues.Did you get a receipt from the store which it was

bought that shows the value of the card as well. Usually, gift

giving people attach that with the card as well to show that it

has the amount matching the same value printed on the card.

i generally avoid using visa gift cards online.

try using it in the store for the full amount and make sure to tell them that you have a visa gift card for $50 and that you will pay the balance on another card or in cash.

Use it in a store and spend over $50 and tell the cashier there is $50 on it. They are finicky but I bet it is a legit card

You should tell the person who gave your the gift card that you are having problems and let them resolve it, hopefully they still have the receipt. I gave a gift card to someone, actually it was two gift cards and they had this problem too. It was a pita but I had to take the cards and my receipt back to the store and the manager reviewed the transactions. In my case, the cashier did not ring them up properly but the manager took care of the situation and replace the gift cards.

I did tell my sister about the card. I'm not sure where she bought it ( maybe CVS). I do have somewhat of a receipt but it states on the receipt no refunds.

@Jordan2 The receipt will have a matching code that is on the package

of the card. Proof of purchase for you.Gift cards are non returnable.

Don't give up. I would call the number on the card and if it is not valid,

tell them to inform you of when and where it was used.

If stores wont accept it, try to purchase something online if possible.

@Jordan2 I know that I had an issue when trying to use a $50 card for an amount that was over $50 and even trying to use the card for the first $50. I think it really confuses most clerks.

Just make a purchase for less then $50 and have them run the card. If that doesn't work, then I would pursue the place of purchase, etc. Try to get it for as close to $50 without going over and then figure the balance is useless.

A lot of on-line retailers won't accept Visa, Mastercard or AE gift cards as payment.

It's been awhile since I had one but remember you had to enter a code to use it for online purchases & at the gas pump...I used the phone to activate mine & if you wanted that option then you picked the numbers to use. Good luck.

I did all that. I spoke to CS twice and they're telling me the card is active. What good is a gift card you can't use online and no one wants to take?

Hi,

I received a Visa gift card for my birthday the year before last. I tried to use online at Old Navy website and couldn't get it to go through. I knew it was valid, had the receipt attached, so I called Old Navy. The customer service rep said they had that problem all the time with Visa gift cards and she took my order and payment over the phone. That worked just fine!

I'm not sure if the online retailer you are trying to purchase from has the option of a call in number, but I would try that if they do.

When all else fails, if the card was purchased at CVS then use the card to purchase stuff at the CVS! They can't tell you it's not good after telling you it is good!

@Jordan2 - since online isn't working isn't there somewhere you could use it locally? Grocery store, Target, Macy's, anywhere?

I have used a lot them with no problems. Got them at Sam's Club to hand out for gifts. I had a few left... $20 each and used them in Walmart with no problems.

@Jordan2 I've never had a problem using them. Is the order you're trying to place over the amount of the card. In that case it probably wouldn't work because it's not like using a store gift card where it knows the amount available and deducts it off. The website would be trying to hit the full amount on the Visa.

If the order is over the amount of the Visa card, purchase a gift card from that website for the Visa amount then apply that gift card to the purchase. If you've decided to wait but you use Amazon or Target you can go to their sites and purchase their gift cards and they will go right to your account and you can use them as needed. Probably other stores too but I'm not sure.

I have had several of these given to me as gifts. I don't like this gift card at all! When I didn't register the card, I had no prroblems. However, when I did register with my zip code, I ordered something online and left the remaining balance there. About a week later, I went to use up the balance, and it said zero. Someone stole it. Thankfullly, it was only llike 15 dollars left, but still I was angry. Forget about calling them and reporting it,. I got no answer. If you google this Vanilla Gift Card, there are many complaints online about this particualar card. I read to never register the card and use it up as soon as possible. I do think there's issues with this card and I know that two of the cards I received were purchassed at CVS also.

@pigletsmom @gidgetgh , I really wanted to buy something for myself, not buy groceries or that type of thing. I have used gift cards online where the purchase was more than the gift card. In that case the amount of the gift card was applied to the purchase and I charged the difference.
