Royal Caribbean Wrongful Death Suit Filing

The Times of Northwest Indiana (is this a credible, reliable news source? You decide) has reported that the family of Chloe Wiegand will hold a press conference this morning to announce the filing of a wrongful death lawsuit against Royal Caribbean.

The press conference is to be held at the Fraternal Order of Police in South Bend, with the parents raising awareness about window fall dangers in fighting for justice for Chloe.

The suit is likely to be filed in Miami.

And the next lawsuit will be coming for the lives lost in New Zealand. I mean seriously, what is up with these cruise companies? You let tourists on an island with an active volcano??!! I have cruised many times over the years but I stopped years ago as I felt it was not the same as it used to be. It was a special vacation once upon a time. Now these crusie lines are all about the $ and lacking the safety of the passenger.

@LindaSal Completely agree. We've taken 21 cruises in the past 13 years but have no plans for another for the forseeable future. The experience has definitely changed and not for the better.

Not sure what the OP is referring to. The grandchild who fell overboard??

I guess I assumed everyone interested knew the name Chloe Wiegand and her connection to Royal Caribbean as it was discussed here in great length. Sorry, but I should have been more obscure.

I went on one 4 day cruise years ago. Don’t see the appeal at all and don’t plan on going on any more.

I think it's justified. That window should not have been open. Anybody could have sat on that railing for a picture of even bigger kids playing around and fallen out that window. It was dangerous. And the grandfather wasn't thinking about safety.

@LindaSal. There are many places with active volcanoes; Hawaii, Mexico, Italy, the USA. That alone is no reason to exclude tourists.

We went on a cruise for our honeymoon. Not anything we'd do again. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't our kind of vacation.

To sit in that railing, you would need a chair or a stool to stand on first or be lifted up there by someone. it's not a window with a railing that you could just lean back and sit on. Anyone can sit or climb over the ship's railing or the many decks. Maybe the ships should have plexiglass walls so no one sits or climbs up on the rails.

My heart just breaks for this family and for the grandfather. He has to live with this horrible disaster for the rest of his life as also the parents. I know that authorities want to press charges against the grandfather. That's just totally heartless.

Did you see the picture? The hand rail was right underneath the open window. It was hand height. Anyone could lean, attempt to sit or walk on it. Kids could be playing around and accidentally push someone through it.

@bathina Many parts of a cruise ship are open to the sea. Some totally open on some decks. The way you’re talking you want the whole ship enclosed with no open windows. Cruise ships don’t work that way.

Maybe we should do away with windows everywhere. What about a home with more than one story? Should we do away with those windows?

I’m not sure everyone really knows what a cruise ship is.

The Grandfather made a huge mistake. Put the blame where it belongs.

All this 'fighting for justice for...' is utter nonsense and frankly annoying. This has little to do with 'justice' for that poor kid... Of course, accidents happen and it's a litigious world, but what kind of miscreant sits a baby anywhere near a window without making sure the area is safe...

At the press conference it was confirmed that the suit had been filed in U.S. District Court in Miami, seeking an unspecified financial award.
