My DD Skyped me from U.K. we normally chit and chat looking up each other’s chins and noses - as you seem to do on Skype - anyway this was ‘special’’ as she was attempting to show me my grandson - her son - taking part in changing of guard at Windsor and trying to pick him out under the bearskin ‘hat’.

While the old guard and the new guard exchange rituals the military band started to play ‘We are Sailing’ and wham we both just collapsed - this was her wedding song- as she married into military- and when her and husband came out of Abbey all his crew mates had crossed swords and band playing this song - a complete surprise - he has since suddenly deceased so we were not expecting this at all and there was her son and this music.

This triggered all kinds of memories. We still couldn't pick out her son but enjoyed the chat, some tears and each other’s noses!

How nice to be able to talk bySkype and see your grandson even if unrecognizable.
I've seen the old guard and they are very special!

I do not believe the playing of a song with great meaning for your family happened by chance.

Others may not share in my belief, but I think your late son-in-law had a hand in bringing about such a warm, loving and meaningful moment.

Lovely. Just lovely and a beautiful Christmas present for those who loved this man.

@golding76 Your thread very lovely and interesting as this was our grandson’s first Change of Guard - that is why DD so excited- and I know his Dad would have been so proud. Thank you.

@dulwich. That was a very poignant story.
I do have to think that, though very prestigious, guarding B.Palace has to be kind of an awful job, esp in hot weather in those uniforms and hats. Good for your grandson for taking it on. I couldn't stand for that long even when I was young and certainly not now!

Do let us know what he says about Meghan Markle, esp if he overhears anything juicy among the royals! (Just kidding)😁😄😁😄

@Pearlee I don’t know how they do it either but members of our lot who are military love it!

One of ours was assistant to Charles during the Diana years/saga spent most of his life at Palace and every time he came home we tried and tried to get the ‘dirt’ to no avail. Nary a word would he utter - to this day!

@golding76 I do believe as you do. I think our missing loved ones have not completely left us and have ways of letting us know that.

@dulwichI'm sorry for your family's loss. His dad sees and as you said is also very proud.

@esmerelda @golding76 I relayed your kind thoughts to DD who will really appreciate them.

My son-in-law was deceased while on active duty so hearing this music at the Chsnging - played by the Royal Marines - Richard was Navy too - was very weird, to say the least.

@dulwich Your post and the replies have me in tears. I also believe as most of the others do. And how wonderful that this meaningful song was played on that particular day. I don't think there is a dry eye on this thread.

@Love my grandkids Thank you for your kind comments. DD had not watched recording wanted to share the first look with me and when we heard the music both of us kind of collapsed at same time - life surely hands out some surprises.

I'm adding my tears to this thread. Wow, what beautiful comments were posted, and aren't we all sentimental people? I am a real softy, tears come to my eyes when I hear our national anthem, but this thread went beyond that, I had to wipe away the tears that slipped out.
