3 pieces of furniture are being delivered to my residence next week. Is it customary to tip the deliverymen?

Yes. We always do. Anywhere from $10 to $30 or even more to assemble a huge poster bed. Or carry lots upstairs.

We have always tipped delivery people. I know many don't but I always think "If you can afford it, why would you not?" I've talked to delivery folks over the years and they don't make that much money and generally work hard.

They do a service that we found useful and liked to show our appreciation.

No, I don't tip them. Truck drivers are not service workers and are very well paid.

I tried to tip the two gentlemen who delivered my couch and chair, but they wouldn't take it. Go figure. They even offered to move my old couch from the first floor to the basement. And then the store owner called the following day to ask if I was happy with my new furniture. I told her that I was very happy, and would see her again when I needed more items for my home.

We recently bought a couch and paid $100 delivery fee. That's a lot of money. My husband still tipped the guys $20.

I do but around here it's usually free shipping. The guys lift heavy furniture, steer around other furniture and assemble things. Rarely do you find older men delivering, their backs can't handle it so, I think, it's only nice to tip.

The furniture store charges $70 for delivery up front, I'm not going to pay more to the delivery guys.

I always tip for furniture delivery, and usually tip for most other delivery services.

I always tip when it includes set up, placing furniture, setting up a TV etc. I do not consider them truck drivers.

When I was young years ago, people in the 40,s and 50,s, 60,s didn,t tip. When did tipping everyone become so popular?

Food servers if they give good service I can see. The tip jar at places I serve myself and just give them the money is ridiculous. Self service yogurt for instance.

When I was a waitress for 17 years in a dinner house, we served six and seven courses for a tip. Salary was $1.75 an hour union.

Delivery people work hard; lifting heavy furniture or appliances is hard or dangerous on their backs and other parts of bodies. I always tip them. Those "delivery charges" go to the store; not to the delivery/set-up people! Those individuals probably make an hourly wage, which isn't much and certainly doesn't provide benefits.

It seems it's expected to tip for everything these days so it is difficult trying to figure out how much and to whom and if different in different parts of the country!

I think it feels good to tip when you really feel good about the services, rather than feeling obligated, though I've done both.

I am always so grateful for anyone delivering a heavy piece of furniture and getting it through the door that I do tip. If the store includes set up I don't necessarily think that makes me want to tip more because that is part of their required job.

I just can't imagine how people can move, haul such heavy things-it hurts just to watch them and I always worry about their poor backs!

I've been reading a lot about tipping in general to get some help with catering delivery.

We do very large catering orders in my company. I had a $4000 order last week. They charge me $200 for delivery and set up. I know that some of that goes to the company for the cost of the truck, gas, insurance, repairs, but not all of it.

A 20% tip is insane.

For our order next week, it is $1300 with $100 delivery fee.

I tip them. I want them to take off their shoes, remove any packaging, and not damage my floors or the furniture.
