Do you ever wonder about the Goats?

I saw a picture of the goats lined up and tubes attached to them to obtain the milk. I wonder how long the goats have to stand there? I don't know looking at the picture made me feel sorry for the goats.

Trust me, the automatic milking process goes a lot faster than hand milking, and the goats get used to the routine. Their feeding schedule is tied to the milking routine, which helps keep them compliant!

@Katcat1 - What do you mean by tubes? A dairy farm I used to visit had an electric type milker for the cows. They attached to the udders and the milk pumped automatically to a holding tank. I don't remember it taking that long and certainly must be a shorter time than hand milking.

The Beekmans have a livecam on their goats 24/7 that can be accessed from their website. It is my understanding that the goats on air with them on the shopping channels are most often local goats rather than their goats. Pretty sure the goats are well-treated.

Yes I do wonder about the goats. I figure the baby goats are taken away from the mother goats so their milk can be harvested for human use. No baby goat should have to be bottle fed if it has a mother. It's very sad.

how do you think cattle are milked

or a nursing mother uses a breast pump

I often wonder how often the female goats have to have babies to keep enough soap making milk.

And I wonder what happens to the baby goats. I know what happens to calves, and Premarin ponies

@Glittergal You and I seem to keep meeting at the barnyard gate...LOL Here's the scoop on Mama goat and her baby. Right after giving birth the Mama's milk isn't 'fit' for humans. (that's a nice way to describe it)......so baby goats-cows have Mother's milk all to themselves. Eventually babies advance to grains and hay - and we humans - can then take and enjoy the milk.

No reason to be 'sad'

I LOVE goat milk!

Actually, I prefer it to cow's milk.

To me, goat milk tasts rich and creamy, and it is easier to digest than regular cow's milk.

I don't know about goats but can speak for cows. Cows get accustomed to the person who milks them and they form a bond. I actually have had to milk cows in my youth. When I saw them, later as my family sold our milk cows to a dairy because we were no longer physically able nor had the manpower to maintain it, hooked up to those machines without any gentle touch, no bonding with a human being, it made me cry. Our cows knew us and they knew who usually milked them and if their usual person was not there, they did not want to cooperate. We knew all their names and they responded to our call to them and our tocuh.

If you've never grown up on a farm, or had grandparents who farmed, then you're probably not familiar with milking dairy cows (or goats). The udders fill with milk, and the animals need to be relieved of it. (I won't comment on calves who are raised as "veal"). The milking process is automated - much easier than sitting next to a cow or goat and milking by hand!

About goats. We also had goats. They were used for monitoring the horses. If one of the goats got sick, we knew a horse would most likely soon take ill. They were good to herd the horses sotospeak and be their canary in the coal mine.

Milk cows - calves / Milk goats - baby goats, if the babies are drinking the milk, where does the milk to make soap come from?

When the babies stop drinking, ‘to go off and eat hay’ the milk stops. Most don’t grow up, yep, Sad.

But, nice to think cute baby goats & cows created just to keep mama giving milk find find good, Happy, homes.

I wonder where all this stuff is made. I believe it is made in New York and by now they must have a huge manufacturing facility making all their products. They used to say their neighbors were their helpers but they have a ton of products to be made. Just curious.

I wonder how they get the goats to smell good enough to be inside. I can't even imagine what it takes for that! Gaaaag.
