I read the terms: that Rakuten has access to google email and contents.

"If you elect to use Google to create or sign in to your Service account, your Google account will be automatically linked to your Service account, and we will receive access to your Google email content. We may also offer you the ability to link your email account from other email service providers. If you elect to link your email account with your Service account, we will also have access to your email content. Email content from your linked email accounts shall collectively be known as “Email Data”. "

Can they read my email, contacts, etc. ?

According to what @skittles2 quoted, I would say yes. But I don't know for sure. "If you elect..." says to me it's your choice to do so or not.

I would think this is the same as other websites that allow you to sign in using Facebook, for example.

I avoid that kind of option. They don’t need to be linked in any way to anything extra.

I refuse to use anything related to Google (including Chrome), they're too intrusive, sell your info, as well as bombard you with advertising.

I'd love to get money back. Is there a way to sign in, and get money without using social media or gmail?

Do they send money to Paypal? I wonder if that has these issue too?

also, does Mrrebates work this way too? I'm ready to do loads of shopping, who wouldn't love money back, but not at the cost of having my email accessed

Can they read my email, contacts, etc. ?

If you are using google for email, GOOGLE is reading and compiling all of the content in your email, storing your contacts, etc... AND developing a profile on you.
Same with Facebook, Amazon..if you have a smart tv, an Echo pod thing, use Alexa, a Nest thermostat (which have cameras in them) or a roomba (which maps your home's floor plan)
Also, if you have loyalty cards from stores, they see exactly what you are buying and how often
I also see now that Microsoft's push to upgrade to Windows 10 has all kinds of data mining in it.
Rakuten is the least of the problems...

they give 3 options:

continue with:

Google

Facebook

Email

If I use my email which is gmail, is that the same as Google, won't they still have access if I use gmail too. I also received a "Link your Email", whatever that means??

@skittles2 : I was asking myself the same question. Here’s a simple explanation l found:

“The main difference between Google Account and Gmail Account is that Google Account allows the user to access a variety of services provided by Google while Gmail Account allows the user to manage an individual's emails.Jun 22, 2018”

I think the short answer to your last question is yes, b/c Gmail is part of your Google account. The privacy problem is a real concern for me, too. I wouldn’t do “Link your Email,” though.

I don’t know if ordering through the Rakuten/Ebates app is any better, but that’s what l’ll continue to do.

There are other variations. If you have Facebook, they have access every one of your email contacts.
