It's a shame he has to go to China, but that was the deal when his parents were loaned to the Washington DC zoo. So, it's Bye Bye to Bei Bei.

I live in the meto-DC area. I'm so sad to see him go. I understand the agreement, but he was such a delight. Hope a new baby is produced in the not-to-distant future.

I'd never seen Bei Bei, but some of my grandchildren did on a trip last summer.

I remember seeing Smokey the Bear at the Nat'l Zoo when I was little. I'll have to ask my mom for the pictures they have, would like to see them again.

I haven't seen Bei Bei but I have seen other Pandas in D.C., San Diego and two breeding areas in China. It is absolutely the right thing to send him back to China so they can responsibly control the genetics. The Panda population has doubled in last 20 years (to 1800) but there is still much to be done. I too saw Smokey at National Zoo (around 1950).
