I Am Getting Rid Of My Car.

In June of 2018 DH and I got a used car. No point in brand new as we didn't go very much. However, in the 6 months since DH died that car became a money pit. Monday I was to take the kitten to the vet and when I was starting out the driveway a power steering light came on and it wouldn't steer right. Bagged the vet appt. I'm done.

I refuse tospend a lot of money on a vehicle I won't use much at all. DD has a Honda Civic w/1 yr. left ojn loan. 109,000 miles. She has wanted a Honda HRV.

We decided that I am selling my car for whatever I can get. I will pay the lease downpayment of $1,500 on the HRV. Both the Civic and new lease will be hers. I will be added as a driver on both.

To keep miles down on lease she will continue driving the Civic to work (abt. 75 mi.round trip) and I will use the new HRV. I will be lucky if I hit 3,000 a yr. She said the HRV will be easier for me to get in and out of.

Since I will no longer have a car ins. payment I will give her the money for the ins. on the HRV. About $100 a month. I figure it's the least I can do for be able to use her cars.

Going Saturday to get the new one. Just in time for me not driving for 6 weeks after TKR next Wednesday.

I'm going to assume that if you are posting here, you are looking for comments. If my assumption is wrong, please ignore my message.

If this works for both of you, go for it. But as an accountant I would think about the equity of expenses if you will be paying her. Just something to think about, please don't answer these:

1)Who pays for gas....are you expected to fill up the tank for a 5 mile jaunt?

2) How are the other living expenses shared?

Does she pay rent?

Does she reimburse you for cleaning?

Does she pay you for cooking?

Does she pay for her own groceries?

Does she pay for your expenses/time when you take her kitten to the vet?

Does she pay for cable/internet?

3) Most importantly, is she not going to move out? I was under the impression that she just moved in to help out when DH was ill.

Just my thoughts. Again, if it works for you, go for it.

I think I am missing something...it sound to me like she is leasing this car for you (she is paying for both cars monthly) and you are making the $1,500 downpayment. If you are going to be the one driving the car, you are just transfering the insurance payment from your old car to the leased car - right? Am I missing something or do I have the info mixed up? Whatever it is, it sounds like it works for both of you and that is all that matters. I am just confused.

@Travone She pays the electric bill, the phone bill and the cable bill. She pays the vet bill for her kitten. I will pay for whatever gas I use. She does the majority of the heavy cleaning right now due to my knee. She goes all the grocery shopping for me. We are company for each other and she does more than her share.

Yes, she helped with her Dad but really she and I get along great and I have no issue with her staying here. She's gone 11 hrs. a day at work and she goes to movies and does whatever else she enjoys, I want her to have a life. We have a good time together but we are not joined at the hip.

I will worry about a vehicle should she move out but I can't see it in the near future.

@Travone I forgot to add, I would never asked my child to pay me for food. She eats dinner here only 5 days a week. Weekends she might eat breakfast and dinner.

I also wouldn't ask for reimbursment taking the cat to the vet.

She's my child and some random person staying here. I would do the same for my son. She does her share and certainly doesn't expect me to pick up after her or support her.

You will love the HRV. We traded our civic in for one a few years ago and we love it. Plenty of room to haul stuff and getting out is now a breeze.

@ciao_bella Thank you. Both my daughter and son are great human beings. They both work harding, compassionate, and kind. I am very proud of both of them.

Both have been a Godsend especially since their Dad died.

This sounds like a great arrangement! It’s great that you and your daughter get along so well and your good company for each other. You’re very lucky to have two good children and I’m sure you raised them well.

@mamaslittlepotato Both kids, I say kids but they are adults, and I get along great.

Daughter and I have the same warped sense of humor. DH used to just sit and shake his head at us. DD and I would out with the same phrase or comment at the same exact time about something on TV.

the old car that you are selling may be a simple fix......power steering fluid. that is generally why the p/s light comes on. generally, you can still drive your car, but it may take a bit more muscle to steer. take it to your mechanic so that he can check it out before you sell it. if it is a simple fix, then you should be able to get a decent price for it.

@sunshine45 That was my first thought. My son is coming this weekend and taking it to his house. He and his 2 best friends are very mechanical. He has another one that owns a garage.

I'm glad we are doing this but I hate all the bells and whistles on new cars. I also had this no key thing.

We tested an HRV because I only needed a small SUV. I liked it but ended up buying the smallest Chevy SUV (a Trax). It's already had two recall notices so maybe I should have gotten the HRV.

I want to get rid of my car, too, and not get another. I hardly ever drive and if I need to get somewhere I can get a ride. I hate driving and everything that comes with car ownership...such a waste of money.
