Anyone hear this expression? I haven't had this said to me, but recently, in the middle of a discussion with my stepdaughter and her friends, I was told boomers should "sit down" since we've created existential problems the new generations have to solve.

It rocked me for a split second. I made sure she knew that she can thank generations who went before, for the rights she enjoys now.

Anybody else?

Yes, I have heard it. In some circles, it is considered to be disrespectful. Be careful how you use it and with whom you use it.

I don't consider it disrespectful, though it is condescending. I wouldn't use it since I am a boomer.

I haven't heard it - maybe because I'm too old to be called boomer??? - but just yesterday there was a long article online about that what it called an "ageist slur."

Maybe it is, but my first reaction to it is that it's like a teenager's "whatever" accompanied by a roll of the eyes. Not nice, but when was the last generation not blamed for the ills of some subsequent one? Maybe the military of WWII?

For one thing, I am sure some boomers have their nose cut off, because some of them were always convinced, they knew all of the answers to eveything

I can recall the things that were said by some of them ,to older people. Never trust anyone over 30. The world isn't for you now..I guess they need to take their lumps just like they handed them out

As one of those Boomers who came from the generation that was known for the maxim, "Don't trust anyone over 30," I can say that the millenials will get what's coming to them some day. We are running out of time to find common ground in this country, divided in too many ways.

I am proud to be a "Boomer". Suggest to your GD that she get involved in anyway possible to work for change as she sees fit. She may not be old enough to _ _ _ _, but she can still volenteer in any number of ways.

Ahhhhh.....ladies, I had completely forgotten the expression "never trust anyone over...." I guess every generation has their expressions of disdain for the generation ahead of them.

I saw the video of the New Zealand representative saying this after being heckled by another rep. about her age. It was her turn at the microphone, discussing Climate change, enviroment issues. I say well done to her. The generation before has caused problems in the enviroment. She was addressing that issue. Happy to see young and old people standing up for enviromental issues.

it was a friend of my stepdaughter. They are late 30s and very, very involved. I get schooled all the time. What's ok to say, what is not, why certain things are looked at differently now....well you can imagine. I'm not opposed to it, in fact I welcome the learning. But nobody has ever suggested to me that my generation should "sit down".

Yes, I am aware of it. I think it's useful to know what's "out there", in order to be empathetic to my surroundings, but it doesn't "offend" me. That's the intent.

I was more offended by the notion that my generation should "sit down". I made sure to let her know that my generation and several generations before fought for the rights she doesn't even think about today, especially as a woman.

It's been widespread on the internet for awhile, and it is patronizing and rude-- says far more about the person uttering it, than the target.

Apart from that, I abhor lumping people into one category for opprobrium, based on chronological age, or anything else. Treating and evaluating people as individuals, and the way we ourselves would want to be treated, is a life lesson that these individuals would do well to learn.

It is extremely rude as well as ignorant to blame baby boomers for the ills of the world. If I had heard such garbage I would be giving them quite a history lesson that would shut them up.

There's plenty about the younger generations that anger me and I can find fault with, but stay quiet out of respect and common courtesy. Maybe they can learn that lesson from "boomers".

I probably would have said something like it is just like her generation to blame others for the difficulties they can not handle, but created in their own time. Not taking responsibility and owning it.

Not abiding by the laws of this nation but by catering to those who break the laws. By banning books, our past history, our culture and changing what so many fought for. Being proud of being American citizens, and living in a nation that tolerates so much from so many who show disrespect more and more each day for this nation.

Fake news was in the 60's too until the networks finally had the courage to show what was really happening.

Call it a Boomer statement, an opinion, from one who would not "sit down".
