ANY NORTHERN CALIFORNIANS HAVE THEIR POWER SHUT OFF?

So far, so good, was supposed to be cut at noon. The nights are the worst when there is no power, can't do much of anything, even with flameless candles, lol. If no replies, I will ssume you have no power, what a pain it is when that happens, no tv, computer, etc.

The power outage isn't just in Northern CA, it's affecting more than half of all counties. I used to live in Kern County (Not N. CA) and most of that county is included. This feels like it might become new normal for CA).

Why are they shutting off power? I feel for everyone who is dealing with it.

Ours was off last weekend but it was after a storm and only a few hours.

You'd have to REALLY love living in California to put up with that. I suppose people have jobs, own homes, etc and can't just drop everything and leave but it would be tempting. Is this going to happen every time the wind comes up? You'd think they could pay for helicopter patrols to look for possible fires and quench them fast.

During long, dark evenings can you stream movies on your computer? Read a Kindle book?

There has been extensive reporting on the reasons for this.

My DS and family are in the South Bay of L.A. County and in no dnager of having power shut off.

One of the really terrible fires was started due to a power line falling, I think on some trees.

That, coupled with the winds that are normal this time of year (I am originally from So. Cal.) is the reason. It's hoped that this will possibly prevent another major fire.

All fires are terrible, of course , but California has had some especially fierce fires. It's been all over the news in recent months.

@happycat Apparently, it is happening in areas of high wind with high humidity, we have neither today, so as to prevent power lines being blown over causing a power outage, sounds very fishy to me after living here my entire life.

@Kachina624 No power, no computer, horrible at night, not to mention the thawing of freezer food. It was out for a week once, when DD was newborn, thought we would freeze to death.

@mousiegirl. How do businesses operate? Like large supermarkets with no lights or registers. What do they do about emergency services like 911? Can generators be used? This seems like it would have a huge negative economic impact.

Prayers to everyone who is being effected by these power outages. We had over a week of no power last spring due to a bad storm...lost everything in fridge and freezer...no gas for cars, no atms to get cash, and worst of all, no a/c with temps in upper 90’s. My heart goes out to everyone. Just stock up on flashlight batteries and make sure your tech devices are plugged into charger whenever possible. I have relatives who live in Fullerton but they are on vacation out of the state right now....don’t know how, or if, their area is impacted.

There is another rationale for the outage which has not yet been discussed on this board. PG&E went into bankruptcy over causing Paradise fire; they asked to not be held liable for similar future fires (Court denied this request, hence here we are!).

@Kachina624 I assume some have generators, but they are expensive though I read that some can be bought that only two items can be run on it, except total house lighting, I assume, but don't know. I have wanted a generator for years as we lose power often, or used to, lost tons of frozen food when it was off for more than twenty-four hours, and I doubt many business can operate without power, but for me, the worst is the night, boring to say the very least.

I remember there was a game at Pac Bell park or Candlestick before the name was changed, which DH was at, and it had to be stopped with no lights on the field the players couldn't see.

@patbz Yes, I forgot to mention that, and this is the reason I think this is being done, as it has never been done before, that I know of.

I am in the most southern end of santa clara county. We are spared, but everywhere else is on watch...or already without.

we are thinking of getting a whole house generator. We have a 1000 gallon pond, I cant go days without power!! What are they doing about people with medical needs that require oxygen and beds and such.

where I live in town our power lines are old. We are without power often! For an hour to 3 hours once 6 hours.

Cell phone carriers said service should still work during PG&E power shut-offs. Most of California’s cell phone towers have backup generators. AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular told the federal government last month they were prepared to maintain service. For sites without generators, companies also have fleets of mobile sites ready to roll. However, if a fire breaks out, companies said they can’t guarantee they’ll be able to access cell towers to recharge backup generators or deploy mobile cell sites, according to federal filings.
