Purging

It's taken me several days, but I have purged closets, garage and other places in my house and have ended up w/what will probably be a truckload of stuff for Salvation Army. Now I have to call and schedule a pick up time.

I know I could make quite a bit from a garage sale, but I don't have the physical energy to do that anymore, so this is the next best thing. I'm sure there will be a lot of people who will benefit from all my stuff and that makes me feel good.

Sounds great, good for you. I'd love to do this in the garage and again in the basement. Every time I want to, or bring this up to DH, he freaks out because he's a pack rat and just can't part with anything. We have stuff dating back to his grandparents. We have enough stuff of our own let alone others' as well.

@Patriot3 I used to feel the same--pangs of guilt for money wasted on items I purchased but for one reason or another ended up not loving.

Then I decided to do an attitude adjustment. I vowed that as long as I have the good fortune to purchase new things, I will gladly and with a charitable heart give to those who might be going through some difficult times.

I believe to do so is building good karma that is far more important than the few dollars items bring in on the secondary market.

I purge regularly. I don't like doing a huge, overwhelming purge.

I will NEVER have a garage sale again. I'd rather give it to someone I know or donate it.

I've been trying to purge for a year and every time I walk in that room it scares me. Who the devil bought all these clothes and shoes? It multiples like rabbits.

Every time I think I've made a dent, it magically fills back up again. Last year I have dozens of shoes and bags of clothes that I donated and right now I have two bags in my trunk and am working on the third one. Still can't slide the clothes in the closet across the rail. Unreal and stupid.

Similar situation here. I have streamlined just about everything in our house, but I can’t get DH to part with any of his old stuff. The basement is full of old high school & college texts, electronics, spare parts for stuff that belongs to who knows what, etc. Drives me crazy.

If you're a pet lover, please think of donating to your local humane societies, too, (including their thrift stores). There are a couple that I donate to regularly here in Maryland that are close by. I'd rather my donations go first to the animals and people second. Just saying.

Especially towels and blankets @PickyCindy . Ours are always in need of those items.

I absolutely love this post! Because I love to shop, I take regular inventory of my belongings and donate things no longer in high favor, or that I just do not need. My children do not understand how I can just "give away" some of my more expensive items still in new or excellent condition. Although worded differently. I explain it to them just as you shared here. I bless others as I have been blessed. Thank you for this beautiful post!

I needed to read this! I bought a couch 2.5 years ago and have not like it. Just bought a new one over the weekend. I have the "old" couch listed on some local selling sites, but I don't think I'll have any takers at the price that I want for it. I think I might look for a family who needs a couch and give it to them. Heaven knows with all the flooding we've had here in WI over the past few years, I'm sure I can find a home for it.

I go through twice a year & get rid of things but only donate unused or like new items. The Goodwill bin videos are eye opening, it's the last stop for a huge amount of unwanted donated goods before they go to the landfill...after seeing that I realized charities are paying lots of money for dumpsters & trash removal so if I don't think it will sell, I throw it away so they don't have to pay to throw it away.

@kitcat51 I'm the same way. I will not donate anything that is not in good shape and functional. If I can't use it, why would I expect anyone else to.

I feel the same way about donating clothing. If it's stained or stretched out of shape and I won't wear it why should I expect someone else to wear it.
