I haven't priced them myself. I know they are pricey but if you can afford it, they are well worth the peace of mind you get with one. We talked about it for years but just don't need to shell out the money right now. We have a Honda portable generator that we can use when necessary.

We bought a new house in June, and we took our Generac. It was almost $7000 and I didn't want to leave it. LOL

If your power goes out often then that would be a very nice convenience..we were out for ten days once and that would have have been so nice.We had to throw out a lot of food and couldn’t have a shower.

rWe were lucky to have two gas fireplaces that kept the house decently warm.

It's not just the upfront costs either. They need to be serviced regularly (some say yearly) by a tech to ensure they'll work when you need them. The gasoline and diesel powered versions need regular maintenance on their batteries, oil levels, oil changes, air filters, etc. It's essentially like owning an extra car in terms of maintenance.

The yearly fee to maintain ours is $150. He changes the oil, filter and checks everything.

Is this a whole house generator? We have a small one that can keep a couple appliances going, but nothing major like an HVAC system. My brother-in-law installed a whole house generator for his home. As soon as the power goes, the generator kicks in. Nice!

@sidsmom No because we lose power a lot and we need a generator, so am very familiar with the name.

I was without power for about 10 days myself, I think it was 2 years ago. It was not pleasant. But I still don't want to spend the money on a generator. I don't mind "roughing it". When the power comes back on, it makes me appreciate it that much more. If we know a hurricane is coming, we stop buying food that needs to be refrigerated or frozen, and try to eat up what we have.

@Puppy Lips Makes all the difference in the world when you have a well. No toilet flushing. No shower. No water at all. Since ours goes out a lot it makes sense. What would we do without a toilet for a good amount of time?

@goldensrbest It depends on which model you choose....we chose the 9kw and it cost us $13,000 for installation and set up. The two 120 gallon propane tanks installed and filled cost us another $3,000. So approx total for everything was about $17,000 with 10% Washington state sales tax.

We just had our installed about about two weeks ago.
