Ko !

That is a wonderful memory!!!

My family moved whe I was in fifth grade which was traumatic having to leave my friends behind. I was still in the same city only but on the opposite side which was far enough. I felt so alone and unsure of what to expect when I went to my new grammar school.

Within a few weeks I had made quite a few friends, boys and girls. They took me under their wing and I became part of their group. We stayed friends throughout grammar school and into high school.

I have been retired for a few years and still have those friendships. We have been friends for 63 years and we still have so much fun and share stories and memories. Meeting these people was the most memorable grammar school experience and still bonding with them a blessing!!!!!

Ko - keep telling that story. It's a wonderful tribute to a man who was more generous than we all know.

First grade teacher - Mrs. B. She was so pretty and kind. I skipped Kindergarten and was young and anxious. Cried a lot. Mrs. B was so sweet and reasurring. After Christmas break, her husband transferred to military base in Alaska and I missed her like crazy. Right before she left she suggested I be moved to a more challenging class. She hugged me and said, "I believe in your potential." I had no idea what potential meant, but loved her for saying that.

Class trips around 3-4 times a year. So fun.

We'd jump on one of those yellow school buses that didn't seem to have shock absorbers and sounded like a Mack truck on its last legs even though they were only a few years old. Their engines always sounded like they were pulling 40 elephants up hill and the drivers never did master using a stick shift.

Those who ran the fastest to the bus got the window seats. But, everyone was well behaved unlike today. We didn't know many, but on long trips, sometimes we sang patriotic songs we had learned in class.

We went to NYC several times, historical areas of Philadelphia, Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, Gettysburg Battlefield, Valley Forge, Amish farms, old house tours of notable historical figures, farms, museums, old churches, one room school houses.

We also went to places that demonstrated how old tools and furniture were made. Some remind me of a small version of Williamsburg.

I remember one house where the owners slept on flat pieces of wood...no mattress. Can't remember the name.

Since then, I have revisited some of those places and of course, appreciated them much more than when I was young.

I loved elementary school and don’t recall even one unhappy day there. Excellent school in excellent school district. Lots of individual attention. At this time of year, I often recall the simple joys of shopping for and happily anticipating each year’s first day of school. My mother had gone to the same school and had similar, happy experiences there. In fact, her third grade teacher was my sixth grade teacher, so the school had a warm family vibe to me.

Mine was a sixth grade math teacher who had a talent to make math fun.He always said “no applause just throw money” after teaching us something new when we all understood.I arranged for everyone to bring pennies to class one day and we all excitedly waited for his famous punch line and just began throwing money. He was stunned and I think a little embarrassed too.He told us he would donate the money to a charity after we all helped him pick it up.

Wow, I have a lot more unhappy moments of elementary school, but if I had to pick one favorite it would be this:

In first grade on Valentine's Day, all the kids brought in Valentine's Day cards for their friends and I remember receiving one from a boy I had always thought was cute. I was so flattered, but realistically, he probably brought in a VD card for everyone.

Doesn't take much to make me happy!!

So this maybe isn't my favorite memory, but one that comes to mind. When I was in first grade I had this sweet young teacher, Miss Roman. She was probably fresh out of college. She was so kind and patient with all the students. Anyway, I remember one day seeing her at the bus stop, I was so excited to see her outside of school, I gave her a big hug. You never thought of teachers being like normal people, they were special.
