A shocking video clip shows two small children illegally strapped into booster seats in the back of a pickup truck on a Kansas highway

The amateur video was shot by a motorist driving along the highway in Wichita.

Dmitri Fernandez filmed the bizarre scene while driving along Route 54 earlier this month.

The clip went viral and has been viewed more than a million times online.

A local police officer told KSNT-TV that the driver was breaking the law.

‘Regardless if someone has made an attempt to install a seat back there, in this case...if [the seats are] not where the manufacturer intended for a seat to go, it’s illegal,’ said Sergeant Jess Hancock.

In my time, we would be flying back & forth in the back of the pickup.

So many stories of a Farm Kid, circa 60-70’s.

What are seatbelts?

Oh My Goodness!!! What where they thinking. In my town it is against the law to have children riding in back of a pick up truck period.

I prefer to think of non-parenting parents as nothing more than biological delivery systems.

Good grief @sidsmom , with all due respect, there' s a huge difference between children riding in the back of a pickup on a dirt farm road at maybe 20 mph with no other traffic (I did that many times growing up) and doing it on a highway at higher speeds, lots of traffic and asphalt, IMO.

In my state, GA, it's illegal to have an animal in the bed of a pickup, tethered or not, much less kids.

Horrible things have happened, good legislation IMO.

In some things kids have it easy, yes, but not when it comes to safety. Do you think if the truck rolled over, those kids would survive? They'd be crushed to death or possibly thrown out of the truck seats and all. Dumb call on the drver's part.

I also think of them as 'incubators'......and some of them are malfunctioning incubators.

It was a tongue-cheek response.

BUT to add to my story....my older sister did a 4-H demonstration

on how to wash a calf. It won awards locally & was asked to present

at the Nebraska State Fair in Lincoln. Big honor.

So dad put up racks on the pickup bed & did whatever farmer dad

would do.

Packed up the family with a live calf, & throw everyone in the bed

of the pickup driving down the Interstate going 55mph for 6 hours.

I was little...maybe 7 at the time, but I remember every minute

of that trip. We curled up with the little calf & housed it in the

Cattle Barn once we got to Lincoln hours later.

Yes, I agree...things are different now.

But as much as things change, some things stay the same.

Back in the olden days - before seat belts - when I was a kid, we rode on our parents laps in the front seat, or sat by ourselves on the front seats - we didn't even have bucket seats then.

My neighbor across the street, her Dad had a pick up for awhile and sometimes we'd go for a ride with him in the pickup bed while he ran errands and then he'd take us for Carvel ice cream. IT WAS GREAT!!

Yes, times sure have changed. Too many people.

Actually it’s called “ free range” parenting now, which means the kids get to wander wherever they want and the parents are free to be immature adults and take no responsibility.

The photo doesn’t show how or if the seats are even anchored into the bed of the truck at all. Those seats are probably like having none at all. We used to ride in the back of our neighbor’s pickup to go to see fireworks. His safety system? He would open the window and yell,
“hang on!”

That does not accurately describe the concept of the Free-Range Parenting Method. There is an abundance of informative info online.

We used to hop in the back to go up the street or to the local corner market, but the highway is a different story. These parents should be charged with abuse.
