Think You Had A Bad Day?

My great niece, who lives in Cherry Hill, NJ, is 9 mo pg and is having her breech baby by cesarean this week-end. She took her pup to a dog park today, leaving her wallet in the console of her locked car. When she returned to the car, she discover the driver's side window had been broken and her wallet was gone.

Here she was alone with no money, ID, license, or credit cards and a car full of broken glass. Plus a dog. Thank goodness she had her phone. Called police who weren't terribly helpful. Probably took one look at her and wanted to leave fast.

She finally called a Nissan dealer (hubby works for Nissan) and they came and got her and the dog. She tried to get a loaner but didn't have a driver's license so that didn't work. Somehow she got home; I don't know what she did with her car, maybe the Nissan dealer towed it. Then she spent the rest of the day canceling credit cards. I feel so sorry for her.

It occured to me that this was a great set up for a crook. Women never take their purses into a dog park so all they have to do is watch for one alone and as soon as she leaves the parking lot, smash and dash. She said there was a guy in a white car cruising the area.

I hope she pre-registered at the hospital.

I'm sorry that happened to your great niece.

I don't carry a purse, but I do love clothing with pockets.

All I need is my keys and my wallet.

Easy to stuff those in pockets.

Good grief, that is awful. I feel so sorry for her having to deal with all of this days before the baby's arrival.

On a side note, one of my dearest friends lives in Cherry Hill. It is such a cute town.

Most people these days know not to leave valuables—esp a wallet—in a car. I’m sorry this happened to her, but it’s a great reminder to everyone not to be careless.

@Kachina624 that is too bad that the car was broken in to.I nope that she will never again leave anything visible in her vehicle.My dh was in police force and always tells me to remove anything of value from sight before I park my car.He says thieves watch parking lots and if they see you putting things in the trunk they will break in.

Disappointed in the whole Universe with this story, but hopes that by the time her baby is safely snuggling beside her, all of this week’s annoyances will be forgotten.

I was only “broken into” once in my life, and it was when I was parked in the gated parking lot of a Church. Stupid me!!

I'm sorry to hear about your niece. I hope she has a healthy baby!

I would never leave my wallet where someone could easily see it available for the taking! Instead I would have a small crossbody bag of some kind just for the wallet, keys & phone. It's something that I bring when we go to the beach & I want to carry the above when on the boardwalk but don't want to carry a big beach bag. It's something she could keep in a diaper bag for those occasions when she needs something small to protect valuables.

BTW, I grew up in Cherry Hill, NJ and when my family moved there back in 1965 the eastern part of the township was almost rural. Over the years it's gotten very built up. Now it's so develped that it doesn't even feel suburban anymore...it's a small city.

So sorry for her. But these are great lessons! Once I had my purse stolen out of my backpack as a student, wow, did it make me Extra vigilant and cautious about my belongings and the risks all around us... It changed my behavior forever. I still see ladies at the market turning their back on their purses in the cart- Dumb beyond words...

I’m sorry your niece had such a lousy day. My husband has a fanny pack that he likes to leave in the car. I have begged him not to do that. At least now he puts it in the trunk.

So much stress on this new Mom-To-Be~! Regretfully, I leave my purse locked in an unattended car due to the weightiness, but cover up with a blanket or sweater to deter a break-in, but that is not a guarantee.

@Kachina624 I feel so sorry for your niece. What started out as a very nice day did not end well.

I do hope that her baby is healthy and that she can put this horrible incident behind her. Let's hope that karma does her job well and gets that awful human being who did this to her. Shame on the police for not getting her and her dog home safely. That should be reported.

I have 2 small cross body bags for situations like that.

I always carry my wallet and cell phone. Of course, that doesn't help your neice. Sorry for her.

Read somewhere about a woman who carried her cell inside her clothes-in her bra I think. She was mugged but able to call for help because she had her cell.

When it rains, it pours.

It's always when someone is doing a good thing -- dog park visit, going to the gym -- that they get taken advantage of. Seems these days if you haven't been a victim of some kind of burglary, you are lucky and in the minority.

But they will have their little blessing this weekend.

You see on tv all the time where people wake up to vehicles broken into- why on earth do they leave wallets, computers, purses, weapons and etc hidden is beyond me- people watch and know what your habits are!

My neighbor is an exec for Kroger and opens new stores- I'd bet a plug nickel to a dime her vehicle has been broken into at least 8 times but yet she still leave things "hidden"? I encourage everyone to get a crossbody bag, fanny pack or something small enough to put in your pocket- do not leave in vehicle, trunk's ok but not inside. Thieves and crooks are smart yet stupid, they know & are quick about their mission.

We never, ever leave anything in the vehicle- my purse or some form of purse is always, always with me.

@violann Our church parking lot is not gated, but we are on a fairly quiet road, and actually have 4 parking lots--none really visible from the others. Years ago, there were some cars broken into during church services. After that, a "Safety Detail" was formed, and during every service 3 or 4 of our members either roam the parking lots, or stand at the different entrances (because, these days, break-ins are not the only thing to worry about!). It's worked very well for us!
