The Sears Where I Used to Work, Is Closing

Local news is reporting that the Sears in my town is going to be closing next month.

I worked there for almost two decades, before moving on to "greener pastures" in '08.

I feel bad for the sales people, because it isn't easy to find a decent paying job in this area.

I personally blame Eddie Lampbert (CEO) for the demise of Sears.

Here's the offical announcement from HQ.

"After careful review, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to close the Sears store in ******, Calif. A liquidation sale is expected to begin later this month and the store is planned to close between late October and late November. As we promised, all eligible associates will be offered the same number of weeks of severance as offered to employees of Sears Holdings Corporation prior to that company’s Chapter 11 filing in October 2018. We will continue to evaluate our network of Sears and Kmart stores and cannot rule out additional store closures in the near term. Our goal remains to return the company to profitability and preserve as many jobs as possible in the communities we serve."

We only have one Sears left in Metro Atlanta. We used to have a gazillion of them and we are down to one.

Sorry to hear you are losing yours, we lost ours at one of our local malls last year.

My FIL was an engineer who designed all of their lawn mowers, tractors, etc. for 30 years and the family was avid supporters of Sears products.

Like you, I feel really bad for all of the employees who are losing their jobs as a result of the B&M stores closing.

But you can't stop 'progress', I guess.

The last one in our Texas town closed and has already been torn down which was about one half of our only mall. Sears was the anchor store on end of the mall and Penney’s anchored the other end. Don’t know how much longer it will be able to last.

Yes, it’s a huge change to see it go. Mother worked there as well. One of my greatest memories as a kid was getting that Sears catalog and oh the hours we spent turning each glossy page. We even went to the Sears store to have our annual family Christmas photos made.

Ours closed 5 years ago. I remember going there 60 years ago with my parents. They had a area with horse saddles we would play on. Amagion that horse saddles at a store.

My Sears store is still open, though it gets very few customers (judgng by the number of cars in the parking lot). It was originally attached to a mall, but in the last five years, the mall has been demolished and Sears now stands alone. The first floor is clothing and the second floor is tools, appliances, and home goods. Does anyone still buy clothing at Sears? It's a pretty nice store, as far as that goes, though it has a lonely vibe.

Sadly, each time there's a round of closures, the headline about Sears stores that are still open gets as much notice as the one about stores closing.

I stopped at our local Sears store last week and everything was marked down, there were parts of the store that were bare, and there seemed to be just a handful of sales people. I haven’t heard it is closing but it sure felt like it was getting ready to close. Our Sears is in a huge standalone building which I don’t know what it could be used for if it closes (maybe just torn down). In its heyday 40 years ago it even had a candy counter and small cafeteria.

Our Sears closed a year ago. We always bought our appliances and tools there. They had a terrific repair service.

My dad retired from a Sears. It was in Minnesota. We were far from rich.

years. The real estate Sears stores sit on is worth a fortune.

When my kids were small if you got a Sears best anything, it was just as good, if not better ,than name brand items

I worked for Sears Optical for 35 years. Lampbert has destroyed many retirements. its very sad that so many of my dear friends lost their jobs after many years of loyal service

The large Sears near me has been vacant for about two years. Usually when these larger stores go out of business, a gym takes over the space. We have more gyms than we need:/

Our mall which is where our Sears is located, already has a Planet Fitness in it.

It went in where a smorgasbord restaurant used to be.

@Anonymous032819 Our local Sears is actually 30 miles away from my home now. Our local Sears closed probably 10 years ago. My family still purchases stoves, refrigerators, wasers and dryers, and lawn mowers from them. Our little Sears does not carry any clothes or such, only small appliances.

I was a child growing up in the 60s and 70s. We loved, loved, loved getting the Christmas catalog. It was worn out by December. My family bought Kenmore appliances for years. Our local Sears closed a year or two ago. Sad!!! It was a lot of good memories.

Sears...so many memories of being a kid in the seventies and getting everything there. And can't forget the Wish Book at Christmas time. What a great store it once was! RIP

Bought my boys clothes there when they were kids. Couldn't wear out those kids clothes, like JCP kids clothes. We handed them down thru the family.

My mother loved Sears. I remember when stores downtown were only open Thursday night & what a treat to go out to Woolworths to sit at the counter -- then walkover and shop at Sears. Fond childhood memories in mid 60s. My brother liked to ride the pony in the boys department!
