Bed Bath & Beyond

Got a surprise/shock this morning. Our local BB&B store is closing. Big one on State and Grand in Chicago. Fortunately, we have most of our household goods and there's always Amazon which I'm sure has led to this store's demise.

Very disappointing and sad.

I wouldn't be surprised if the one here closes too. Also, their website isn't that great.

I haven't heard anything about the Seattle BB&B, but the one near me is located in a mall that is transitioning to mainly a sports training facility, ice rink, and restaurants. Macy's is leaving that mall as is Nordstrom and Penney's. Probably many more will follow. Amazon is fine for some things, but for me, BB&B is a ten minute drive from me, and if I want something, it's nice to get it on the spot and not have to wait fro the mail or pay shipping on a small item. I would not be surprised, though, if the one near me will go the way of the other stores. Northgate Mall is one of the first in the country of its kind, and certainly THE first in the state of Washington. Now it's going to be part of the movie theater and sports entertainment zone instead. Progress?

I moved recently...replaced a lot of home items.

I think, honestly, that alone will pay their rent for another month/2.

I read in a business article last week where it stated that Bed Bath & Beyond failed to keep up with the habits of shoppers. The article indicated that online shopping is fast becoming a primary way for shoppers to spend their dollars and the brick and mortar store sales were declining. I hope they can recover from this slope as I really like Bed, Bath, & Beyond.

The article was a cnn.com article titled Bed, Bath and Beyond is running out of time...dated 2019/07/11.

They are closing a lot of their stores. I guess business is bad. A lot of brick and mortar stores are closing. Maybe people are doing more shopping on line.

Sometimes I wonder if we are going forward or really backward.

Years ago you could walk down a city street and shop at many stores.

Years ago if you did not live in an area that had such stores, you would drive to the neighborhood and do the shopping.

Years ago you would look forward to receiving a catalog and ordering from it.

Then came the malls. A place to shop with so many stores in one location and with food courts to eat lunch. And see holiday decorations and kids waiting to see Santa.

Today we shop TV. Today we shop online. We sit and shop and munch at home while doing so.

We receive packages. Oh, at first those packages felt like presents and you discover what you ordered, and thought it was what you wanted.

Then you return it not to the store, but to a mail carrier.

Today the variety and ease is so abundant but you do not get to see, and feel, and actually look at the item you are interested in.

When I can I still like going to the mall and some stores that are still there. I like walking around to shop, and sitting and eating amongst others. I miss the catalogs. I enjoy the exercise.

My desk chair and couch have been well worn in, and so has my butt by lack of exercise. My back hurts do to my posture and dressing nicely does not matter.

The conclusion is that by going forward with tech, in reality it went backward. No exercise, no social interactions. And sometimes credit card shock.

It is disappointing to see the brick and mortar stores close, and malls becoming ghost shopping.

Maybe some Bed, Bath and Beyond will survive.

Not necessarily.....

Total = 1525+

Looks as if they are restructuring. Closing stores where business is slow. Building new ones where business is booming.

I live in their headquarters state. I am surrounded by BBB stores. Everyone I've been to are so large you need roller skates to get around. And, the place stays packed!!!!! I try to get there in the a.m. hours when it's less crowded.

What I like about BBB, if I do not find what I want in the store, the clerk will go online, order, tack on their 20% discount & FREE ship to my house or I can pick-up in store.

I pretty much agree with you 100%. I will buy some things online, but not clothes. There are too many manufacturers and no standard sizing. I won't even order from my favorite clothing stores, i.e., Talbot's, because there is no consistency in their sizing. Each item may be produced by a different manufacturer. If I can't try it on, Im not interested. I also think customer service is not what it used to be, which also contributes to online shopping.

I've seen what I assume is the definition of "millenials" at malls and in restaurants and they seldom speak two words two each other, instead they are busy on their cell phones. I had a friend that I used to meet for lunch once a month and we would make an entire afternoon of it. One time we were trying to enjoy lunch when another friend kept texting her. I was annoyed because she took the time to reply and keep a conversation going. This "other" friend was her next door neighbor and there was no emergency. We meet far less often now. I felt there was no excuse for her to be so rude....she is not a millenial.

But .like you, I still enjoy going to the mall, if for no other reason than exercise, and talking with human beings face to face. Not to menion in AZ right now, walking anywhere outside is not an option for most, and certainly not for me.

I love BB&B. I always find something new in the store. I hope they don't close the one nearest to me.

@chiclets You make some good points. Today I ordered a couch and chair from a storefront business in my town. The interior designer and I enjoyed a cup of tea while deciding on the design and materials and looking out of the shop to watch mainstreet traffic pass. It was much more fulfilling than choosing a design online and hoping that the color swatches would be the same when it arrived.

@kaydee50 I'm in the Chicago area and I've been wondering which stores around here (if any) would be closing. This is the first one I've heard of since the news came out that they planned to close 40 stores. I checked the news online since you posted this and I haven't been able to find out anything about it. I'm wondering how you heard about it? Did you see signs posted on the store?

Plenty more stores seem to be only hanging on...when you see stores with only “clearance” racks it is a red glad....

@DearPrudence Yes, we found out about the closing on our way to the Jewel supermarket. There are big signs in the window saying the store is closing. What a bummer!
