Plastic surgery in the DR?

Now the news is surfacing of an American woman dying in the DR after tummy-tuck surgery and possibly another procedure....she died from infection. She found the doctor on FB and he said he would do her procedure cheaper than her American doctor. Apparently many travel to the DR for plastic surgery due to it being cheap. Sounds like you get what you pay for. I love a bargain, but I can’t imagine traveling to what is sounding more like a third world country and allowing someone whose credentials I don’t know to do surgery on me!

I actually used to work with 2 people who went to Mexico for bariatric surgery. You could not pay me enough to do that.

i am appalled anyone would try to save money on plastic surgery. geez. plastic surgery is scary enough without doing homework, investigation . you shouldn't try to cut corners. if a person thinks there are no risks with finding a dr on Facebook, they need to stay home and be forced to watch the deaths and botched jobs of those who did.

crimeny, there are risks and complications from Doctors with stellar reputations and credentials. why would a Dr advertise on Facebook, or advertise like that anyway. if they are good, people come to them, and they decide if you are a good candidate for surgery. only a dr who is in need of money, or lacks proper credentials or experience would do that.

i had some plastic surgery years ago, before everyone was flocking to get all kinds of surgery. I knew of the Dr's reputation for years! i checked with AMA. when I went to visit he interviewed me for an hour. He gave me books to read, testimonials, and a pamphlet to go over all risks. after I read that pamphlet, I didn't do it for a year. i mean, one complication is death. it isnt taken lightly. I never regretted it, and that was 16 years ago. but I have to say, now-a -days I might not. who knows. so much more has come out. also, now they have botox, fillers and other less invasive options.

My husband's cousin died from an infection after getting a tummy tuck type procedure in Mexico. She was ill and in the hospital many months before she passed away.

i had plastic surgery after weight loss in NYC. I did a lot of research and even in NYC one has to be careful. I met with three physicians with excellent reputations with referrals from my PCP & Gyn. Being a nurse, I asked many questions. I chose the most expensive physician as he was patient, not arrogant and answered every question, showed me videos of results and I met with patients who had the same work I was about to endure. I've also met patients after the surgery from the others I interviewed.

plastic surgery is not easy and can be botched and you live with it or endure further attempts at correction. just because it's elective, it doesn't mean it's any less serious.

I just cant imagine shopping by price nor would any credible plastic surgeon advertise on Facebook. Tho many prominent physicians do have websites which are quite helpful as you can leave a message and get an answer off hours & read information pertinent to your condition.

I had great results and there were no surprises because I made it my business to be informed. Why would one go to a third world poor country for any elective or cosmetic surgery.

Several people have died this year after plastic surgery in the Dominican Republic.

All the stories I saw were younger people (1 man) who went down after seeing ads in FB for cheap surgery.

All died after the surgery not during.

Shame.

There is a lady that lives down the street from me. She went to a foreign country (can't remember which one, but it wasn't the DR) to have liposuction and a few other procedures done. She almost died and couldn't come home for 2 months. She needed a blood transfusion and had an infection.

All the things she was going to have done only was going to cost $1500. It would have been over $15,000 to have it done here. I thought she was nuts to go there in the first place.

You couldn't pay me to do anything like that...

I don't understand it either, but it seems to be a growing market for it since it's about ninety percent cheaper to have something like this done in these countries than here. A lot of the places the surgeries are done are unsanitary, and people die when their surgical sites are infected with rapidly growing mycobacteria, which is a bacteria that's often resistant to standard antibiotics.

There's some reality show on TV, I think these two docs are located in LA and they clear up a lot of botched surgical procedures. Forget the name of the show, I only watched it a couple times because it was so gross. Women have gotten surgery in Mexico and the Carribbean. Don't hold me to this but I think some have had concrete or a concrete derivative injected into their faces! I think one or both of these doctors are on the shopping channels. One is on Investigation ID as a host.

@wishmoon Is it called Botched? I know there was a show on called that. The people that lived ar lucky they are still alive.

Yes, that's the one! You're right about that, some of them were permanently disfigured.
