When you know someone is, shall we say, stretching the truth, do you just let it go or do you need to point it out. This can be one on one, in a group or on social media.

If someone could be hurt by a lie, I would call them on it. If they are just bragging, and stretching the truth a bit , I would let it go

Depending on what was said, how it was said and who said it and like others stated if it could possibly harm someone, I would speak up politely about whatever it was especially if I definitely had proof that what was said was not correct!

i used to be very vocal about calling people out. these days, i am grateful that i have learned to let it go. it's just not that important to me anymore and most of the time i am able to keep my opinions to myself.

i think this also depends on the subject matter. Are we talking about the size of the fish we caught? i'd make a little joke about the "real size" or something.

if it's about something more serious, i would throw out something like "are you sure that's accurate" just depends.

how about a example?

Top of my mind this morning is someone making statements about a situation and claiming to "save" so much money. It is literally not possible. Would it make a difference if it was one on one or social media?

I would and have let it go when it's just stretching the truth about a job which has nothing to do with me. I have a friend who likes to exaggerate the truth a bit. In the past she has made her job much more prestigious than what it really is to others in my presence though I knew better. I kept my mouth shut and bit my tongue.

I find your siggie interesting considering the topic. It sort of says to say nothing, because if you do you'll just make them look bad. However it can be tough. You feel like by not saying anything you only encourage more of the same from that person....not an easy decision.

And, if you do decide to question this person, I would NEVER put it on social media. That is just asking for a fight or confrontation and then everyone gets involved and picks sides, etc. YUCK. And, ultimately, if it is no big deal, it would just make you look bad.

However what if someone was providing wrong information that someone else may rely on. Just walk away?

It depends on the lie. It depends on how big, serious, potentially dangerous or mean the lie is. We all stretch the truth or exaggerate something from time to time and it's harmless. It's human. Sometimes someone will tell a "whopper" but it's just a matter of rolling my eyes and moving on. It doesn't matter. Sometimes, I can't let the lie go unacknowledged because it is a lie that matters. That happened on FB not to look ago. It was about a case that's in the news and some women I am FB friends with weighed in with a story she obivously made up. There was not a lick of truth to it. She didn't preface it with "I think" or "it's possible". She said "the papers are now reporting". No...they werent. It's a big story, still unfolding. If any legitimate news outlets were reporting what she was spreading, it would have been on every news site and in every paper and on all the news programs. So, I called her out on it.

unless it negatively impacts someone and the person is just being pretentious, it's not worth even discussing.

I let it go if it's about themselves, their accomplishments.

If it's about someone I know and it's negative, I just counter with something positive about the person without challenging what they said.

If they're praising someone I do not find praiseworthy, I let it be know that I disagree. To say nothing would indicate agreement.

If it's about a politician, I just slip away.

nope, i dont feel the need to call them out if it doesnt really hurt anyone.

the truth always has a way of revealing itself eventually.
