Luckily, I've Only Known Two People Like This

Both were middle aged females (one married, one divorced) who find ways to gain sympathy for their lack of money, when in fact they are reckless with their spending. With the advent of Facebook, one lady basically publishes her wish list. A kindly person just offered to buy her an expensive birthday gift. I know when I return from our vacation, she'll call and tell me she never expected him to go shopping for her, but since she is such a good friend, he insisted and she didn't want to hurt his feelings. Yeah, right!

I've never known anyone like this thankfully. I do have a few, whom life has truly given a hard time, bless them!

I don't know how I would even react to people like you describe. Hopefully, they're in short supply!

I have always thought it was a no-no to talk about how much money you do or don’t have....a sign of ill-breeding as my mother would have said...if someone is truly in dire straights there are several ways to get help...but a birthday gift because they have already shot their money? No thanks. I don’t have friends like that and hope I never have any like that either.

I don't know anyone like this, but I also think that "reckless spending" is a matter of opinion.

I have a good friend who spends a lot of money on things that don't seem worth it to me, but it's her choice. I'm sure that some of my spending habits aren't understandable to other people. And that's okay. I don't feel that I'm in a position to judge what's reckless spending and what isn't. And I certainly wouldn't want anyone - especially a friend - to be judging me.

I have sympathy for people who truly do have lack of funds, but have found in my life that usually the people who complain the most are the ones who have the most money! It bugs me when people I know and are close to, spend foolishly on unecessary things and then expect those that are close to them to constantly help them out. I used to fall for this all the time but now I do not.

I have to be frugal -- not cheap --- in my own life. I can't put my financial life in jeopardy for people who refuse to accept responsibility for their own financial wellbeing. If someone has a genunine need and are trying their best, then that is another story entirely.

One never knows the other person's struggles, emotionally, psychologically, and physically.

No, no...she's married and the gentleman is fifteen years younger and suffers PTSD @chrystaltree . They have little in common except he's told her about the good financial position he is as the result of an inheritance. I know her husband feels bad, but she is at home and her 74 year old husband still works because of her reckless use of their money.

Lucky lady? Really, I wonder if you feel the same about the people she is using and manipulating due to her irresponsible behavior. Oh, why would you care? You have it all and then some, I forgot. It is people like you who claim to have a perfect life, that I know better than to believe.

I know someone like that, she plays on the emotions of others. She says they have no savings account and have credit card debt. She whines about how she only gets $300. a month social security because her employers never treated her fairly and she got fired. Her poor old sickly husband has to work fulltime and she goes picks up his paycheck so that she can cash it immediately. She goes shopping everyday. She cried to a young man about how poor she is and he felt so sorry for her that he plows her snow and repairs their delapidated vehicles for free. She uses anybody to get the results she wants!

@chrystaltree Seriously! Someone that spends all their money recklessly and then manipulatively begs online for gifts. There are takers and givers in this world, but to go to that extreme is pathetic and sad.

Interesting views @RetRN . One thing I've noticed and don't understand is people saying I'm not much of a friend because I wrote about a behavior that I don't like. The person who finds a perfect friend is lucky indeed. I try to look for the good, and there is some in my friend. Without a doubt she'll ask me what I think. I can honestly tell her that by posting the exact items she wishes she could afford, some people may feel obligated to help. I'll remind her what has happened when she needed a car. The person that gave her a significant amount of money to buy one has since been cut out of her life - which is another story.

Also the ones who think they are entiltled for free things. Sure they don't make a whole lot of money, but taking all the time is not right imo.

I'm neutral because I'm reading one side of the story. I've learned through bitter experience to form an opinion only after hearing from all parties.

Neither will I personally attack another poster for her opinion. It serves no one.
