Help with dog itching

My yorkie poo has allergies. Apoquel worked for awhile, then last year didn’t help so much so they gave him a shot. It worked great. This year the shot didn’t seem to help much, they gave him a second shot and said to keep giving him the apoquel also. He still itches a lot, any ideas on what else I can do for him

Yes, it's hard to see your dog suffer. I'll take a stab at your question. Assuming your veternerain has mentioned this, what about your dog's diet?

I have two Cocker Spaniels, known for itchy skin, and my vet thought their allergies also contributed to their skin condition. Their diet is all homemade food, with vitamins that I add.

Spent hundreds $$ on medications, different shampoos, this is the only thing that helped:

Keto-Med SP Shampoo $18. (only available at veterinarian's office)

Hate to say it, because I love a clean dog, but bathing is what sets my chihuahua off itching.

@20961 My westie is itching so I got her the shot yesterday. My vet said it can take up to 3 days to work and use apoquel till it kicks in. She has been very peaceful all day so I haven't used the apoquel. I had bathed her 2 days before with medicated shampoo but it seems to be a ****** shoot as to what works when for these beautiful animals.

God help you, i have tried so many things, mine has grass allergies, is your food related,or other like environmental?

i think our little girl has grain allergies. scratching like mad.

i bought some childrens benadryl liquid, and have been giving her a half a ml about every four hours. till the new food really gets going in her system. it's been helping.

Are your Yorkie's symptoms seasonal...more so in the Spring? Is it worse after your doggy comes in after being outside? Besides itchy skin, does your doggy's nose ever run, eyes water, and sneeze?

Dust is a one of the causes inside.

Have you thought about allergy testing to see what your Yorkie is allergic to, at least to find out if allergens are the cause?

If positive, injections are given over a period of time. They work.

Another thought, my sister had a dog with dermatitis. He was prescribed Head and Shoulders weekly. It worked.

Sometimes, it's food. 80% are to beef, chicken, lamb, fish, eggs, soy, and wheat. Corn, as well. There are foods sold for allergies. Or you can make your own as long it's balanced.

All of my very small dogs had allergic symptoms in the Spring. Most of it was itchy skin, but one had all the symptoms found in humans along with itchy skin. They were given a low dose of Benedryl for a few months. It worked.

Whatever you do, if at all possible, don't go with steroids.

Sure. Go back to your vet. Maybe ask for a specialist to examine your dog. Your vet is the ONLY person who can help.

Our dog Willie had really bad itching. We started with shots from the vet and then went to predisone. It got to the point where neither were helping him and he was losing hair and red and raw. Took him to our local kennel to be boarded while we went on vacation and they told me about this dog food they had called blackwood. ( I was so worried they were going to tell my he had mange.) So I tried it. It was a miracle. No more shots and no more pills. His hair grew back and the sores on his tummy went away from when he would drag himself all over the house.

It is the Blackwood with catfish in it. They got rid of this dog food eventually and switched to Victor brand which did not work. Luckily we found a feed and seed store about an hour from us that sold Blackwood and he got back on that. It is expensive but putting the poor guy thru 2 to 3 shots a month, when it got really bad, and him taking pills it was well worth the price. Good luck and hope you find something to help the little fellow.

He passed away 5 years ago at the ripe old age of 17.

Have they done allergy testing on the dog? I would think the first step would be to find whether the allergy is environmental, food, etc.

My female GSD has allergies. I give her apoquel. She still has some reactions with the itching. I think she's allergic to grass and dirt...really. I bathe her with an aloe dog shampoo and a conditioning rinse for allergy sensitive skin. That helps. I also found a topical spray (Tropical line of products) for allergy relief. They make about 4 types of allergy sprays. This gives her relief on the really bad days/season. Hope it helps your fur baby.

Have you tried pure wild caught Alaskan salmon oil? That has really helped to keep my dog's ears clean and skin conditioned.

@20961 My poor terrier suffered terribly last year. Itching and licking until his tiny little legs were almost bare from loss of fur. Shampoos, flea treatments, nothing helped. Went to the vet finally and he took a skin scraping and it turned out that he had a skin infection. Never heard of that before. Prescribed antibiotic and prednizone and he's all better. Poor little lamb.

I suggest you try Lipiderm ~ it's fish oil Omega 3 and 6 supplement for dogs. It has helped our dogs immensely. You can buy it on Chewy ~ I use the liquid but I believe it also comes in capsules. Not only has it stopped the itching, it also helps with the shedding and your fur baby's fur will be softer to the touch. It's worth a try ~ I noticed a change for the better in less than a week and have continued to give it to him every day. Good luck!
