manners really table manners

when did we lose our table manners? i eat out sometimes and i am shocked by what i see as a lack of good table manners. some people will drink, their soup rather use a soup spoon. they don't even know how to correctly use a spoup spoon.

then there is the sopping up of sauce with bread.

i know we all use these thingswhen weare at home but in public?

I can't say I pay too much attention to how other people are eating their meals, when I'm in a restaurant. Unless they're disrupting my own meal, it doesn't bother me. Sometimes there are cultural differences and I'm not about to ask anyone why they're not eating the way I would.

That's not my obsevation. Try dining out at better places where you are likely to encounter people with better manners.

I don’t pay attention to what others are doing, when I’m dining out. And I’m shocked and truly concerned about a lot more than table manners.

I don't pay attention, either.

Unless a person loudly passes gas, burps, or blows their nose with a honk, I couldn't tell you who used a spoon and who did not use a spoon.

And what is up with "we" lost our manners??

Unless someone is dining with the Queen, or is eating at The Four Seasons, I really don't care how other patrons eat their food.

Depending on the dish, a good crusty bread is perfect for “sopping up the sauce”. I’ve been known to sip a brothy soup from a mug. I didn’t realize I was being judged. Ask me if I care. 😂

I have absolutely no problem with the "sopping" up of sauce with a piece of bread.

It's a long standing Italian custom and tradition.

However, it is suggested that when doing it in a public setting, you use a fork and not your fingers to grab the bread.

I was lucky to have an aunt who was a Home Ec. teacher when I was a kid, she taught me proper table manners when I was 8 or 9 years old. It stuck with me and matters to me that people know how to use their eating utensils and where to place their napkin. I don't expect the general public to adhere to correct table manners when they eat out though, if I would not have had an aunt who cared no doubt neither would I.

i did not mean to be mean. i just was commenting on how much we have changed in terms of what is considered good manners. andi like to sop up sauce as well as anyone with good bread.

Well.............you got a bunch of arrows for this posting. I've noticed when the first response is negative......usually those that follow are negative too. I've tried to figure that one out.

I agree with you and I don't eat at dumps - but can't afford white napkin $20 plate meals all the time either. But I see the decline in table manners.

(would you call a Friday fish fry restaurant a dump?)

I don't consider it good manners to watch diners at other tables while they are eating much less critique them.

i try very hard to use good manner when ever i dine out. my parents taaught me that it is important. but each to their own.

on a side note, i had a brother who had a mental illness and we weregiong out to eat. he told me he did not want to go any where he had to know whw ich fork or spon to use.

i asked him why and he told me he did not like it. iexplained that he really needed good manners. ithen asked him that if the president of the us invited him to dine at the white house, that he would not want embarase himslef. he told me it would not matter because he would not go. i asked him why and he told that the then president belong to one party and he belong to the other and that he would not accxept .
