How DO you become a naturalized citizen without speaking the language? If you marry a citizen, are you automatically a citizen, or are you considered a legal resident. Don't people applying for citizenship have to study and pass a test...presumably written in English?

@RainCityWoman, all your questions are easily answered online, and some have been answered here already.

As to marrying a citizen according to nolo.com:

If you marry a U.S, citizen, you won’t be eligible for U.S. citizenship right away. But you may become eligible for a U.S. green card, which can lead to U.S. citizenship.

However, there are certain requirements that must be met before you can apply for a green card and ultimately for U.S. citizenship after marriage to a U.S. citizen.

Yes, they have to pass a test (gov page):

To become a naturalized U.S. citizen, you must pass the naturalization test. At your naturalization interview, you will be required to answer questions about your application and background. You will also take an English and civics test unless you qualify for an exemption or waiver

When did people stop learning correct English? When did people start using the word "of" instead of "have". I see it all the time: "I should of...." or "I would of....". Is it important? I suppose in the scheme of things it isn't, but it stands out like a sore thumb to me. I suppose the contraction "would've" has now been translated into "would of". I expect to be beat up on this. That's okay.

I sometimes find myself reading a sentence two (to, too) or three times before it makes sense to me because of bad English/bad spelling/etc. My pet peeve has even made it into commercials and newscasts, so I guess there's no going back. It's the use of the word "less" when the word "fewer" is more appropriate.

I always see " she graduated college in 2011". Instead of she graduated FROM college. It is written and spoken this way everywhere. Say what?

He went out the door is another one...where did the "of" go?

Our language is always changing and evolving and eventually it will be so much different than it is now.

Just a short mention. My grandparents came from Italy in the early 1900's. All of their 11 children were born here and all were bi-lingual. Some of their grandchildren learned Italian too and it is spoken in our family.

Two years ago, a bunch of my cousins went back to Italy to see some family members who still lived there. They were so excited to be able to talk and practice their Italian with them. They were surprised when they had trouble understanding modern Italian. My cousins spoke the year 1900 Italian, whereas those in Italy have evolved with their language.

Well I am of the opinion that when the English language left the country across the big pond, it was never the same. We do not speak proper English in this country, I don’t care who you are. I’m no expert in linguistics but I think due to the many languages brought and spoken here, each region developed their own spin on English. I think that’s what makes America good, but I do think the only proper English is the Queens English. And that’s my two cents!

I was an English major, but even if I wasn't, the decline of proper grammar usage is appalling. DH and I have a pet peeve with talking heads on t.v. who don't even know when to use "me" versus "I". On this board my favorite peeve is the interchangeable use of "two, too, to" with no regard of appropriate context.

We do not speak proper English in this country, I don’t care who you are. I’m no expert in linguistics but I think due to the many languages brought and spoken here, each region developed their own spin on English. I think that’s what makes America good, but I do think the only proper English is the Queens English. And that’s my two cents!

Well... I think there are about 30 different dialects of the English language in the UK.

Which one do you think is the Queen’s English?
