Chipotle Fans Beware

You know what goes horribly with a steak burrito ... STAPLES!!!

But, that's exactly what MMA announcer Jimmy Smith claims he found in his food on Tuesday when he took a bite out of a burrito he bought at a Chipotle in Delray Beach, Florida.

"I took one bite and it was something hard in there and I pulled it out of my tooth and it was 14 staples," Smith says ... "A brick of staples!"

Smith -- who's called fights for the UFC and Bellator -- says he called the restaurant and "freaked out" on the manager ... because he realizes how DANGEROUS swallowing a staple could be.

Smith also says he's LUCKY he didn't ingest the office supplies because he eats like a wild animal -- usually tearing through his food as fast as he can.

Fortunately for Smith -- and Chipotle -- Smith says it does not appear he injured his tooth or his mouth ... or suffered any other injuries from the fully loaded burrito.

Smith says the situation was escalated to Chipotle's corporate offices -- and he has already been contacted by a rep looking to make things right.

Smith says he's not looking for free food or money and does NOT plan on filing a lawsuit -- he just wants the problem corrected so nobody else chows down on 14 STAPLES!!!

"This can't happen to someone else."

We reached out to the restaurant and Chipotle's corporate office for comment -- so far, no word back from either.

Wow this is interesting because I always watch them prepare my food and have never had any issues. I wonder if the order was via drive thru or called in and delivered? Regardless, this is one reason I don't eat out that much anymore.

Just yesterday my Mom complained to Denny's that she was sick from a meal that she purchased. If the truth be told we just don't know what is in any of the food we purchase anymore.

Chipotle seems immune to the effects of bad publicity. It's had so many outbreaks of e coli, salmonella, etc., yet keeps on going. We joke about it when someone offers to pick up food from Chipotle.

That's a joke around here too. I know of no one who actually eats there. LOL!!

On our local news sites this morning one of the town's Taco Bells had placed a pair of box cutters on the top of a drive thru order. The couple were very upset since children could have been the recipient. When they went back all the manager was worried about was if there order was correct. Taco Bell Corporate was contacted and they have now apologized for that franchise negligence and their reaction. Finding something actually in your food is way worse and deadly.

I stopped eating at Chipotle years ago, food wasn’t great. I see no reason to go back.

I have never eaten there....but i never would after all the numerous food problems they have had over the last couple years......last year it seemed you heard about one

food issue after another...surprised they are still in business

I've heard of people bringing icky things like bugs, hair, etc. to put on the plate so they can get a free meal.

If you check the Chipotle financials for 2016, you will see that they are hardly immune from the effects of bad publicity.

Years ago,my sister and I ate at a restaurant that was located inside of JC Penny's. I ordered a salad. I ate 3/4 of it when I found a bread twist tie. then I moved the lettuce around and there around 10 more. Gross.

the waitress said the twist ties were stored in a basket over the salad items and must have tumbled into my salad bowl while it was being made.

They comped our meals, but that was still gross.

a few years ago, we ordered Chinese at our favorite restaurant for take-out. I bit down and felt instant pain. I spit out a hard item and it was a stone.

i looked at the rest of the food in the container and there was a handful of stones in the bottom...they type you would find in a driveway..like gravel. I threw the food out and we never went back.

No wonder we prefer to eat at home. That's only the stuff I know about. I wonder what else was wrong with food we ate that was prepared by others.

Almost everyone I know has a story about resturant food that went wrong.

Yep. I knew someone who did that. He used to take a cockroach with him to lunch.

We have one a couple of blocks from me. I stop in a couple of times a month.

I'm trying to figure out how that could happen.

I order a burrito and the guy/gal behind the counter steams the wrap and then we walk down the counter and pick the fillings. If there were any foreign matter, it would be fairly obvious either in the pan, on the serving spoon or on the wrap.

The last time I ate at Chipotle, I came down with food poisoning. Had the chicken on a salad with vegis and a water. Walking from the restaurant to the car, the nausea hit me. Home was 15 minutes away. Made it in time. I'll spare you the details but it went on for hours. Found out that 2 of my friends who took home chicken dishes to family members had those family members become sick as well shortly after eating their food. This happened last month.

Never again.

@ALRATIBA, I've never eaten at Chipolte so I don't know how they serve the food to customers so I have to ask, how is the food handed to you--in a basket, wrapped in waxed paper, wrapped in foil or some other way.

If the food is not routinely handed to the customer wrapped in foil it would appear the staple sandwich was a take-out order so there would not have been any walking down the counter picking out the fillings while watching the employee.

As to how it could happen I would suppose that if it were a takeout/delivery order the receipt was stapled to the box and an employee refilled the stapler and dropped some staples that happened to land on the food before it was wrapped.

They lay the wrap on a piece of foil and then layer the customer's selections on the wrap as they move along the counter. At the end, the guy/gal rolls up the entire burrito and puts it in a bag. Then gives the bag to the cashier who asks if you want to add chips ... then folds the bag closed, puts into a grocery type plastic bag and hands it to me. No staples involved. I'm standing there the entire time makng my selection and watching the burrito being constructed!

Even if they were to staple a tag for a delivery - the bag is already folded close and inserted in a plastic bag.

The whole staple story sounds odd. Per my experience ... this "doesn't compute."
