New Feature in NYC

This new structure in NYC gives me the creeps. Apparently it's only purpose is to give the public a place where they can walk up and down and get a great view.

I live in fear of heights and hate glass elevators and stairways and escalators with glass sides. I'd never make it up to the first level. I imagine there are many people like me. Do you hate high places? Would you visit this place?

I like that this area will be connected to the High Line. I’m sure I will check this out in person, because I’m an architecture freak. But I have to admit that as this was planned, my logical mind has wanted to take over to ask, “What is it FOR?” Getting away just to walk is fine, rising up for a different perspective is great, but then what? No place to sit, to have a cup of coffee, etc.? Having spent a chunk of my career in constant motion in busy Manhattan, I see the value of a space in which to stop, breathe, and even reflect. But endless staircases to nowhere look to my eye more like a dizzying repeat of the street-level busyness and stress. I wonder how it will feel in person? I remain intrigued.

I think its an interesting structure but the site seems to be cluttered with what appears to be a train station and other close by buildings. It looks like it was stuck on a vacant lot they got on a clearance sale. It needs to be where one can stand back and take in the whole building without adjacent clutter.

That "clutter" is Manhattan, west Manhattan.

that would be the west side/Hudson Yards

For, the only place you could to Hudson yards if you don't have a penny to rub together, that said it looks cool to me and I would love to check it out

I have seen this in person. The west side of Manhattan has an area that was recently developed called Hudson Yards.

It is just above the yard where they keep all the trains.

That's what you see in the picture.

The High Line goes through Hudson Yards. It is a great place. I have walked the High Line a few times.

You have to order tickets two weeks in advance to go in the Vessel (the structure in the picture)

I think Hudson Yards, with residential, retail and recreation is a great addition to the west side of Manhattan.

I get claustrophobic looking at this.

One of my first thoughts too is how long it will be before someone jumps?

It doen’t “match” any buildings around it and sticks out like a sore thumb

On a positive note, it is nice to see positive growth within a neighborhood.

it's actually a whole new neighborhood where there was nothing before, other than the train yard

The Vessel is only 1 part of Hudson Yards. It is an art piece that is also functional and is supposed to stand out but does not stand alone among the 'clutter'. Hudson Yards is a vast project with office buildings, residences (not that I can afford to live there) shopping and restaurants.

You can grab a burger from Shake Shack while perusing diamonds at Tiffany's - maybe not at the same time.

It is the largest private real estate development in the US by square footage

I plan to visit and free tickets are limited to 700 per day

As for people jumping off - there is always a chance of that happening anywhere.

I’ve been looking forward to this being finished for the past 10 years — it’s sensational! I’m going next month to see it in person. You can eat in restaurants with a window view feet from the walkways.

It was created as interactive art; you cannot help but interact with people across the way because you become a part of their experience in it.

I was was born and raised in NYC, and used to take my son to Chelsea Yards right next door to rollerblade and rock climb. It’s a great vibrant area that does NYC proud.

It is so interesting and cool looking and very different and unique. However, I would not go there because I have a fear of heights.......I would go look at it, but I wouldn't go up in it.......It is a beautiful, unique building, or sculture,etc...

Hudson Yards also has the highest outdoor deck in the Western Hemisphere. It is 1100 feet high made of glass. You can walk 65 feet straight out.
