Here We Go Again....(Warning Long Post)

Don't know if this has already been posted...I just read that Pillsbury has issued a recall for its flour...the warning was not issued by the FDA but the company itself sent out to grocery chains that carried the item.

"Some 12,500 cases of 5-pound bags of Pillsbury Unbleached All Purpose Flour have been recalled because of possible salmonella contamination. This information was posted on the websites of two supermarket chains, Publix and Winn-Dixie, which said that the product was recalled by the parent company of Pillsbury baking products, Hometown Foods Company.

Flour marked with two lot codes are involved in the recall: 8 292 or 8 293 representing about 100,000 bags of flour. The packages carry a best-if-used-by date of April 19, 2020.

No announcement was posted on either the Hometown Foods Company's website or the Food and Drug Administration's website.

Hometown Foods chief operating officer Dan Anglemyer said that the company is working on a press release in coordination with the FDA.

The Details

Products recalled: 5-pound bags of Pillsbury Unbleached All Purpose Flour with lot codes 8 292 and 8 293 and a best-if-used-by date of April 19, 2020.

The problem: The flour may be contaminated with salmonella.

The fix: Consumers should discard the flour and call the company for a replacement coupon, or return it to the store where purchased for a refund.

I recently read that flour is one of the potentially most dangerous items in the pantry due to contamination. Yet we don't give a second thought to tasting the cookie dough. We tend to be more worried about eating uncooked eggs but it's the flour that should be our concern.

If you use flour it means you are going to bake, which means you are going to turn the oven on a relatively high temp, which means the high temp will kill the salmonella, which means this really isn't a problem.

@ID2 .... Unless you are sampling the batter .....

@ItsME and @Kachina624 I am the WORST when it comes to batter sampling. To be honest, I enjoy the batter (especially brownie batter) more than the finished product!

Not if you get the flour all over your hands during prep. Some bacteria might stay behind and get into your mouth. Sometimes four is used in recipes with no cooking needed. This is possible in some kids’ slime recipes and some other craft recipes.

Thank you so much for posting this! I bought some of this flour 3 days ago and already we had muffins with it. I checked the numbers and yes, it is one of the recalled ones. I would not have known if you hadn't posted, so I do appreciate it.

Threw it out, went back to the store and the entire lot was off the shelves now. I got some Gold Medal and hope that will be ok for our artisanal pizza tonight that I'm making for company.

I did not taste the raw muffin batter; never do that anymore, mostly because of the raw egg, but anything can be contaminated nowadays. I trust nothing in the food chain.

We've been warned against tasting batter so if one does its on them if they get ill.

Why would anyone put their unwashed hands in their mouth? If they do, it's their fault if illness follows.

Not too long ago one of our local grocery chain stores called my brother about their ground beef being recalled. I guess they have all that info from the shopping cards we use at their stores.

@occasionalrain sometimes when baking you sample the batter for taste and for most it is just something you don't even think about. If people know something is harmful then I don't believe they would purposely sample the item.

My experience with raw cookie dough is when it comes to children. They love to sample cookie and cake dough...I even remember being given the spoon to sample. There are so many products out there that are connected to raw cookie dough and unless the consumer is warned they would never know this.

If they are aware of the issue and still sample/use then yes they are responsible for any illnesses that occur.

A child old enough to be involved with dough should be told of the risk and be supervised. If they're told not to sample, sample anyway and suffer the consequences, experience is the best teacher.

Blue Bell Ice Cream got taken off the market about 4 years ago due to contamination. After months and months of investigation, the FDA discovered the bacteria came from the raw cookie dough they used in one of their flavors. It came from an outside supplier and wasn't a Blue Bell product. They are back but don't seem to have the shelf space in stores that they previously had.

Thanks for heads up O/P. I guess that I will be buying the store brand. I can not believe that the FDA did not alert us on this. I had to find this out from a thoughtful, sensible person from a shopping channel forum. Wow, when you think you read and heard everything.

You are correct @Kachina624 sometimes the contamination is secondary. I remember that recall because that was one of my son's favorite ice cream flavors. I did not personally care for it but eventually he started eating healthier and stopped buying it.
