Walmart Greeter keeps his job

So happy for Adam K. From Selinsgrove WalMart. Today he was offered a new position as a Self Serve Checkout host. For those of you who were following this story...and commented on this forum earlier...this is the update. He was a greeter for 10 years. He has a disability and his job as a greeter was eliminated. Many people were upset for him, as he is a well loved employee. Today he was offered a new position.

This is wonderful news. Good that he got media coverage, for that reason he was kept on.

It's very nice that he was kept on but what about all the other disabled and elderly who need their greeter jobs?

I had read that a pizza place down the street from WM had offered him a job; guess WM probably offered him a raise also. Am glad he has a new position....but I hate he was used as a way for WM to get better press...I get pretty irritated when I see a big company like WM treating anyone with a disability the way they did. Maybe the WM legal dept told management how many different ways they were violating the ADA.

I was chatting with a neighbor (retired grocery supervisor) and he said that from observing changes at our local WM that the company is in a labor reduction mode. I remembered that when I heard about cutting out greeters. I get why they are doing this but it should be reduction by attrition, not mandate!

I’m happy he is staying with the company which employed

him for 10 years. I believe they offered him a job right

from the start so I’m proud he didn’t let negative social media

influence him to leave the company he likes.

Jay Melton, a NC Walmart greeter for 17 years has also accepted the new Self Serve Checkout Host. From local news reports it sounds like this is the solution Walmart has come up with and will be offered to all 30+ affected disability greeters.

I love when stores hire people who are physically or mentally challenged. They take their job seriously and are very hard workers. My local CVS has a young man named Sean, he is the nicest and friendliest worker, whenever I go to CVS I seek him out and say hello.

I wonder how many potential employers will not hire a disabled person because of the publicity this case has generated? They'd think twice over the possibility of becoming embroiled in a similar brewhaha. No good deed goes unpunished.

I wonder how many seniors subsisting on minimal social security and using their Walmart wages to supplement it, will be out of work because they dont have a pushy mama to advocate for them (or support them)?

I am glad that he was able to keep working at Walmart. While Walmart always gets such bad publicity, it is important to note that many companies are eliminating jobs. I just found out that our Y has cut almost all higher paying jobs and replacing with either volunteers (they hope) or people who will work for $10 an hour, which is not a living wage. I find things like this to be shameful.

@lovesrecess I really don't think WM got better press due to this incident. If anything they got a lot of BAD press and IMO that's the only reason this young man has his job. I am glad he has a job and hope he is happy!

Supposedly Walmart Canada isn't going to be getting rid of their greeters according to a reply post on Walmart Canada's facebook page. So why don't I really believe them? I'm taking a wait and see attitude but as someone with a disabled relative, I still think Walmart sucks now.

I simply can't support a company that thinks that getting rid of their workers whom they know are disabled and won't qualify for a host job that requires them to lift 25 pounds, climb ladders, and stand for long periods of time is acceptable. It's not.

@TY. Wal-Mart is not a social service agency set up to subsidise groups of "special" individuals who want jobs. They are very active in supporting local charitable organizations but they must be competitive in the retail world. They provide jobs for thousands of people, many in small communities with few other opportunities.

When in your country, we stopped at a Walmart in a place in Alberta called Pitcher Creek (Pincher?). It was a small store and most of the help appeared to be Indian. The only other business we could see was a motel. It was out in the middle of nowhere. Think what jobs must mean to these people, yet Walmart is constantly demonized. Everything they do is wrong. I wonder what the effect would be on the world economy if they went out of business? It would be a disaster for the US.

Typical. Big corporation makes a huge mistake, the public has to tell them that they screwed up and then, they look like heroes for doing what they should have done all along.

Who is running that company?

I am happy for Adam Catlin. I also heard about this tonight on WNEP-TV.

Great, close Walmart and let the approximately 1.4 million it directly employs in the U.S. (2.3 million worldwide) get hired by the mom and pop businesses that will pop up once Walmart is gone. Of course even established moms and pops would not be able to absorb that many new employees but what the heck.

Oh, while we're closing Walmart and firing 1.4 million U.S. workers let us not overlook the collateral damage of millions more becoming unemployed because support and provider companies no longer have Walmart to sell their products and services to.

People with disablilities who work there aren't asking for a handout from Walmart. They have a job and they want to be accomodated. It's always a fight for them to keep the rights that they have. I have a disabled nephew so I know how much his mom and dad have to advocate for him.

If Walmart wants to treat their employees like this I can take my shopping dollars elsewhere. Just a quick glance at my Adobe photo album where I keep photos of my clothes and beauty purchases shows I spent at least $100 on those items alone at Walmart Canada in the month of February. That much money and more will be likely going elsewhere now. And Walmart Canada is very convenient for me, it's in a nearby mall and it's easy to get to and it stays open late. But those conveniences won't outweigh how I feel about them now.

@TY So what did Walmart do that was so distasteful to you? From the time the decision was made to change the job descriptions, they started working with the young man and even his parents to locate another position for him. He was never laid off and continued to work. Seems like they've knocked themselves out for him. I hope other workers who don't have pushy moms and have a real financial need for their jobs are as fortunate.

Walmart decided that their disabled workers were lesser than others, IMO. Thank goodness that there are "pushy" mothers and fathers to advocate for their disabled children.

Walmart only did the right thing because they got called out on social media and got push back because of it. If it took a "pushy" parent to get the ball rolling, good for that parent!

Those Walmart executives didn't expect that their decisions would be scrutinized by the public. And yes, I hope that other Walmart workers who have similar issues as this young person have someone to advocate for them if they need it.
