Do You Keep Extra Money In Your House

I have an elderly neighbor ( she is 80+ and may have onset of Alzheimer's) and the neighborly relationship is one sided, she asks favors of me, she does nothing for me. Anyway she rings my bell yesterday asking me for $20 for the cab driver, she says she will go to the bank tomorrow (today) and pay me back. She uses me as a safety net, I feel she asks me a lot favors, she'll sometimes lock herself out of her house and comes to me. I have to wonder who takes a cab if they don't have money on them, what if I wasn't home? Also, I have emergency money in my home just in case I need it, I can't believe she didn't have as much as a $20 bill in her house. Luckily she did give me back what she owed me, I really thought she would forget. I feel badly for her, however I feel she is not my responsibility (I have my 91 year old mother I look after). She has a daughter that knows her mom is getting forgetful, I don't understand how she can let her live on her own.

@deepwaterdotter , I was raised to always have a little extra money on me, I'll stash it in little pockets in my purse and a little in the house. You never know when you'll need it.

Ever since the Northridge earthquake (we lived near it but were spared damage), we do keep some cash in the house. You couldn't use credit cards for at least a few days.

@Jordan2, have you thought about contacting her daughter?

Yes, I have a small stash of money in my home for emergencies and also a stash hidden very well in my car.

The stash in my car has saved me more than once. Once we went out of town for the day and I forgot my cc and debit cards at home. We hit really bad weather and had to spend the night in a motel because the roads were not passable. I was thrilled to remember the stash of money in my car. It meant we could afford dinner.

yes, i definitely have money "set aside" at home plus i have my 52 week money challenge and penny a day money challenge that grows as the year goes by.

Everyone I know has some extra cash put away. My DS and DIL and brother know where mine is...just in case!

The OP should talk to her neighbor and explain she cannot continue to be her safety net and contact the daughter as well.

If the woman called a cab and couldn't pay and you didn't cover it, there would be huge problem.

Contact the daughter and explain all this to HER and suggest she make some kind of plan for her mother.

I always like to have cash and a cell phone in my purse. I don't feel comfortable unless I have at least 100 dollars in my wallet. You are a really generous neighbor, you are her safety net, that's what makes heaven on earth for those who are weak and vulnerable. God bless you.

Yes. There is a chance, increasing every day, that our nationwide electric grid will go down for an unspecified amount of time. Banking services will not work. Cash will be the only viable method of payment. It is a good idea for everyone to keep cash on hand.

I'm 80+, and really no more or less perfect than ever. And I live alone, so once in a while I run into a situation that is difficult for me to handle. Only once I've been locked out. I had a door blow shut from an unexpected gust of wind and found myself outside on an extremely warm day with a storm approaching. Thank goodness a kind neighbor helped me out, and I will always be appreciative. If someone needs me, I am happy to be there for them. Sorry you're offended by an opportunity to help. Perhaps you should move away where there are no older peope. I try hard to be prepared, but being the less than perfect human being I am, anything is possible. If a neighbor of mine needed money I would gladly help them out, and if they should fail to pay me back I will survive without malice. And yes, my Dad taught me never to be in a situation without available money. But the unexpected can happen to anyone, any time.

Jordan2. If it were me I would have a talk with her daughter and explain that you're already taking care of your own mother and that she needs to take care of hers.

You sound like such a kind hearted person but this is putting stress on you when your neighbor does have family to take care of her. It's not your responsibility.

Our neighbor is 88 but acts like a 40 year old. He does most everything for his self. If we need help he's right there and if he needs help we're right there. He has children who will take care of him when he gets to that point of not being able to drive and do other things for his self. Of course we're still going to be there to help him with little things.

You really do sound so sweet but you have got to talk to her family so she won't depend on you for everything.

We have a close neighborhood. Most of us still remaining are older. I would not think of denying anything my neighbors might ask of me as I would know it was necessary. I know the same could be said of my neighbors helping me if need be.

I almost always have cash in the house. I save cash throughout the year to use at Christmas time, so come November I have quite a bit. (I recommend this to anyone wanting to spread out Christmas gift spending throughout the year.) I do borrow from my stash occasionally.

Yes, we do keep some cash in our house.

And I always have cash in my wallet including a $20 bill that I keep folded in a separate section of my wallet. So if I spend everything, I always have that $20.
