A gift (or gift card) of art supplies sounds nice. She'll have more time to devote to doing something she loves and should appreciate the gesture. Another idea is a getaway day for just the two of you. This could be tied into seeing a show, or concert, with dinner and an overnight hotel stay. No hubbies just the sisters.

My sister retires next Friday (3/1). I am thrilled for her. If not for her health I think she would keep going. Last sumer she was diganosed with congestive heart failure on top of disbetes and severe arthritis. Sorry got of track. She has to go for part of the day, something to do with insurance. I told DH I would like to go down and surprise her a work and then go to lunch. She wears earrings and a neckless now and then. Not a big jewelery person. Flowers will just die. I thought of gift cards so she and her DH can go to dinner. Truthfully, I'm stumped. She loves to draw and paint. She is very talented. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

what about a gift card for michaels, or hobby lobby. painting supplies can be expensive. make a nice basket, a good coffee/tea, hand cream, shower gel, cookies. just fun indulgent stuff. throw in a fun pair of earrings. coming from you, she'll probably appreciate most anything.

I have 2 paintings she did for me hanging in my home. I have no artistic ability and envy what she can do.

Get her flowers anyhow, yes, they'll die but they're an extravagance that she deserves. Maybe something sweet like white daisies with her favorite Spring flower here and there for color. That, and a basket with goodies, will make her day, I'm sure! I wish both of you to have a good time!

I love the idea of something you can do together. My sister and I are very close and I would rather have lunch with her at McDonalds than a luxurious spa day alone.

Her hair is kept short and she doesn't color it. Maybe a touch of blush and lip stick. Sitting at a salon for a couple of hours would drive her crazy. lol When I was working getting my hair done, cut and colored was a frequent thing. Also loved cothes, make-up, always wore jewelery. We said our DD's got switched. Her oldest is like me,and my DD is like my sister.

I think it would be lovely to arrive at her work with a beautiful bouquet of artificial flowers wrapped in brown craft paper and tied with a pretty bow. The idea of a gift card to a craft story would be wonderful tucked into the bouquet. Take her out to lunch and help her to feel special. Let her feel that the next chapter of her life will be happy and productive.

Wishing her every happiness in retirement!

Lunch on her last day sounds great. For a gift, I think I'd go with something you can do together. A day out somewhere. Is there a memory from something you did in the past together. Or has she commented on what she plans to do once retired. I'm thinking in terms of making a memory.

Check with her first about these things. Very often there are a lot of goodbys at work, people want to see you off and wish you well, and she may be surrounded and also they might be taking her to lunch.
