Our 50th anniversary is in a few weeks. A couple of people asked if we were having a party. My sister asked last night. No, we are not. We are both pretty low key and don't want a fuss. Dinner with the kids and my sister's family is fine. Two of his brothers and their wives were given surprise parties. Also they put write ups in the local paper. The paper thing is common here. The parties were very nice but it's not us. I hate being surprised with a passion. and both of our kids know that so no worries there. I told them long ago, surprise me and your're out of the will. lol What is your preference? Big blowout or quiet celebration.

On our 50th-3 years ago-we felt exactly as you do. I was having some health issues and I didn’t even think I could even have gone to my own anyways.

My husband put a beautiful piece in the paper and I had also. Neither one of knew this and we both were anxious to see the paper but we also surprised each other. THAT was what our 50th was all about to us.

Just a nice card from our kids at Anniversay time brings pleasure to us. They all write a beautiful note in it.

It’s your Anniversary and should celebrate the way you like.

It is nice when someone wants to give you a party and that is really all that counts.

Honestly, I could go either way.A big party would be fun. But a small intimate dinner with DH,son & his girlfriend would be fine too.

Funny you mention that because my son & I are planning a birthday bash for DH who turns 70 this summer. We are only inviting about 20 people.

When we renewed our wedding vows, ( 50 years)we took our entire family to a restaurant ,afterward

The renewal was a collection of many people, celebrating milestone anniversaries ,and we renewed our vows as part of a group. (We wore nice clothes, and didn't over do it. )

We didn't want gifts or jokes , we just spent the time with our family, enjoying each other's company

Some people enjoy big parties, some people don't. I'm in the "don't" category. I'm just not a party hearty type of person. I prefer smaller gatherings of family and close friends to mark the special occasions in my life. We did not have a big 25th anniversary party; we took a family vacation in Hawaii instead. It's funny because I do love planning big parties, I just don't like the idea of being the guest of honor. And I hate the idea of surprise parties! Not a problem because my family and my friends know me well. When people ask about the party, you should just be honest. "We aren't having a big party, we'll celebrate do something small".

for a 50th i would think it would be fun to throw a big party for your friends and family. what a great way to celebrate with those you love, especially the ones who have been around all 50 years! parties like this are fun and bring people close together. better to celebrate the life with LIVE than to celebrate the inevitable alternative.

of course, if that isnt your thing, then it is totally your decision. no one should have to do something they dont want to do.

have never heard of putting an anniversary in the newspaper?

My husband and I went to Niagara on the Lake for a long weekend to celebrate our 50th. We did not want any parties. We stayed at a beautiful hotel in town and when we told them we were celebrating our 50th anniversary, we were upgraded to a suite and received a beautiful platter of fruit, cheese, and wine. We saw two plays that weekend, enjoyed a trip to a winery, and had a great time.

Thanks for all the responses. I thought I was in the minority on this. I dislike being anywhere near the limelight so to speak. I actually thought of eloping when we got married. We had a wedding but the thought of a church full of people all turning to watch me gave me palpatations.

I vividly remember my Grandparents (on my Mom's side) 50th Anniversary party. I was about 7-8 years old. There were so many relatives there and it was such a fun occasion. It seemed like every reunion was lots of laughing and good times.

Sadly my Dad's parent never made it to 50 years. My Grandmother died when she was in her 50s.

A cousin (on my Mom's side) had a huge party. They rented a hall and had over a hundred people.

It was so good to see everyone get together for a happy occasion. It is nice to see the extended family at an event other than a funeral.

So if people want to have a party. I am all in and have traveled 1,500 miles to celebrate.

And if they want a small immediate family dinner, well that is nice too.
