For Beatles Fans - On This Day In History

Today, Feb. 7, in 1964, The Beatles arrived at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport to begin their first American tour.

And of course, this tour included appearing on the Ed Sullvan show. I already loved the Beatles by this date in history....watched them on Sullivan...and still love them to this day.

And so began The British Invasion.

Ahhhh, sweet youth and those wonderful days of the Beatles...so young and handsome.

I was 13 in 1963 and my sis bought tickets to see them at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. It was August and misting rain.

Acoustics were horrible...no big screen TVs. They were out in center field....couldn't really see them and the screaming was so loud, you couldn't really hear them.

But it was electric and memorable. When they left the stadium, they exited very near where we were sitting. I can remember seeing their faces so clearly. Everyone around us was going crazy, but I just reached out and couldn't speak.

A sweet memory for sure.

@Witchy Woman Oh, I'm so jealous you got to see their faces! And saw the Fab Four perform live, even though you couldn't hear the music.

I never did get to see all four Beatles perform live together (but have seen Sir Paul three times on his tours). That's why I loved the half our ending Shea Stadium concert clip at the end of the documentary Eight Days A Week (the version shown in theaters had this video clip; the version shown on TV did not). It was the closest I will ever come to seeing the Beatles perform live - and you could hear the music and see them in closeup. I loved every minute of the half hour video clip of that Shea Stadium concert. I envy your getting to see them.

I wish I had saved the ticket stubs...but I've never been a saver of things.

Cannot imagine how my sis got the tickets. I will have to ask her. A stadium setting is a horrible way to see any concert. And, back then, the sound systems were weak.

Years later, we laughed that it could have been the janitors out there singing. Had I not seen them walk off the field with my own eyes, I would never have believed it.

All of it happening in seconds...so fleeting. The girls all around us were out of control screaming. It was almost frightening. I cannot recall screaming at all...just being hypnotized.

At 68, it's one of my best concert memories ever.

I got my camera out and took pictures of the Beatles on the TV on the Ed Sullivan Show. I saw them in concert when I was in high school, and have seen Ringo (my fav Beatle) and the All Starr Band twice in concert and Paul McCartney once in concert. All amazing!

I was in 10th grade in 1963 when my penpal from England sent me a 45-record for Christmas with four songs by a group called the Beatles that were popular there. The music sounded so different, but I loved it! The rest was history - why can't I find that wonderful record?!

My all time favorite Beatle's song, hands down, Harrison's, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from the White Album. Fabulous song, with the added bonus of Eric Clapton playing the guitar (after much cajoling from George).

I was 8 years old when my cousin's friend got us 4 tickets to see the Beatles at Shea Stadium. My father told me I was too young to go even though her mother was going. Fast forward, I'm amazed I ever spoke to my father again lol. I SO love the Beatles!

I was 8 back then and don’t really remember becoming a fan until until I was maybe 12 or 13. I do remember my mom dancing around the house to their music on the transistor radio she kept on the kitchen counter! 📻 After that, I was hooked. I remember getting their Rubber Soul album for Christmas one year and I still have it to this day. There isn’t a song I don’t love! Saw Paul twice in concert few years back...it was Amazing.

I was 8 or 9 when they appeared on ed Sullivan. I was instantly in love.

I got Rubber Soul for xmas one year too. I still have it. I have also seen Paul twice. We must be sisters from another mother!

I went to see them in Chicago, I was 15 and there was so much screaming you could not hear the music. What a waste but it was still exciting. Some girls were crying and some past out on the floor. Who knew they would write so many wonderful songs.

I had just turned nine years old, 4 days before, when I saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan; and I saw them all 3 times. My mom bought me their first U. S. album, "Meet The Beatles" when I was nine and had just got through with a visit to the dentist. I still have that album, along with about 20 others. I became a real Beatles freak, and that eventually extended to a love for many other bands of the 70s and 80s.

My future husband played guitar a few times (jammed) with a another guitar player who was hired by a local, professional band. This other guitar player had also been to that Kansas City Beatles concert when he was 13, and became inspired to take up the guitar.

He was Steve Gaines. Unknown at the time, he later joined Lynyrd Skynyrd and died in the plane crash that took the lives of his sister and lead singer Ronnie Van Zant.

I have so many cherished "band" memories and stories, that all started with seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan when I was 9.
